Hi everyone,

I'm a golf enthusiast who is studying for an MA in graphic design at the University of the Arts London. My research topic is related to how the rules of golf (and companion guides) are represented and whether they can be structured in a more engaging manner so that everyone (including juniors) takes a keen interest in their value.

I would be so grateful if you could take a look at my short pdf survey that I have linked to this message. It has twelve multiple choice questions relating to your opinion of the rules and the rule book. Please save the form once completed and send it back to me at golfsurvey@live.com

Thank you so much in advance - I look forward to hearing opinions

Its OK to download, just a PDF file, I have scanned it and can declare it clean.

I think that some of the questions in it are a bit too simplistic.for example

How well do golfers know the rules in your opinion?

Well it depends on how long they have been playing, their experience, how often they play, who they play with.

A golfer who goes out twice a month in summer with mates of the same standard, will not have the same knowledge as someone who goes out all year, plays at different courses with a different mix of players.

I would say that half the rules are common sense, the other half are covering specific situations that may arise from time to time.

I agree that they are not set out in an engaging way and that sometimes diagrams may help.

However the idea of producing a rulebook for your individual course seems a bit silly.

Thank you to everyone that responded! Can see what you meant about not downloading from a stranger - totally agree in hindsight! Wouldn't know how to make something malicious even if I wanted to (which I don't) - which can be exemplified by 3offTheTee's comment.

Thanks you PhilTheFragger for your detailed response - I can see what you mean! I just noticed that there are lots of posts on golf forums (and at clubs) that relate to rule followers being pedantic, confusion over the rules or frustration over a lack of knowledge.

I'm exploring ways in which the rules' uptake could be improved. Combining the rules and strokesavers is one option that I'm considering. This would mean that specific locations on course (water hazards, trees, bunkers ....) could be highlighted to save time and bother during a Sunday medal. silly maybe?
