Good Evening all!

Firstly I would like to introduce myself, My name is Mike and I'm very new to this forum and so far really like what I'm reading, this forum looks like there's a huge amount of positive information!

As a total newbie to the sport I'm bound to send a lot of my time in this part of the forum asking questions, I really do apologise in advance if these questions have already been covered and please feel free to point me in the direction of previous threads if need be.

So I've decided to start playing golf and firstly I'm going to be practising a lot before going out onto the course, I had a set of clubs that my father in law kindly gifted me and they seem to be a decent set for a new starter.

My question (finally, sorry!) could someone please tell which brands of golf clubs are good for beginners, I'm going to treat myself to a new set soon and had no idea what brands are good etc, I appreciate everyone is different and I'm sure that just because you spend thousands, doesn't guarantee you the best clubs, just some ideas perhaps on the good and definitely the ones to avoid. I wouldn't say I'm on a budget but being new to the sport, I don't really wanna invest a lot at the very start.

Thank you in advance for any help and I'm sorry to ramble on! I shall work on this in future posts!

All the best

Mike

Welcome to the mad house LCP, stick with what you have, till you've had a few lessons and played for a while. And then after a lot of practice you may need new clubs and some TCP for your sore hands.:p

Hi Mike welcome to the forum good advice to stick with what you have for the time being, however when you feel the time is right for you to change most people would reccomend that you go see a pro and get fitted that way you will get the chance to try different heads and shafts to suit your needs.
Plus you will be getting professional advice, yes it will be more expensive but IMHO its worth it.
Depending where you live I am sure there will be someone in your area on here that could reccomend a pro to go to.

Unless you are very tall/short, as William says wait a while, then maybe try the second hand market to start with.
Stick with the big names as they will hold their value better.
You won't go far with Ping, Titleist, Mizuno, Taylor Made, Callaway.
Maybe have a look in the pro shops around you and see what they have in stock.
And if you're just starting out, here's 3 tips free of charge........
Learn how to hold the club correctly
Learn how to stand correctly at the start of your swing
Learn how to stand correctly at the end of your swing
And welcome

Stick to what Bob says. Wise man

Once you are ready to upgrade, well worth looking at places like Golfbidder for second hand clubs. They offer a 7 day return policy if you don't get on with them. Loads of choice

Welcome and ditto what others say. Don’t get sucked in by marketing hype when you do change go for game improvement clubs. Ping 10 or 15 are user friendly and easy to hit, lots on the 2nd hand market
Good luck

What are the clubs you were given, they might be excellent anyway.
This is important for the 'bad as well as good' reason. The clubs I hired when out in Oz earlier this year were often just pretty awful - and though they were usable and I was able to enjoy a knock - a couple of times that was actually the limit of it. They enabled me to hit a golf ball whilst out for a walk. But I most certainly would not have tried to use them in any seriousness whatsoever. Let a pro have a look at them.

Just to add an important missing word in the highlighted bit above. The missing word is "wrong" after the word "far" :)

Firstly, thank you all for the advice! It’s all very helpful.
Secondly I’m very sorry for the long reply, I had a big absence over Christmas but now back in action!
The clubs I currently have are a set of “Trilogy” irons 3-SW (this is the name on the bottom)
Callaway big bertha driver and 3+5 wood which I’m very happy with!
And a Callaway Aston Catlsband series which I love!
My set has got better since I posted this, I’m hitting very well with everything but I feel the irons aren’t the best for me, I’ve got coming a set of Callaway X14 irons in 3-SW so very excited to see what they are like!
Seems I’ve fallen victim to the brand man! Lol but callaway so far have really impressed me and I managed to get all of the clubs VERY cheap!

Oh also I forgot I recently invested in a Callaway Forged 60 degree lob wedge too, which is brilliant for me around the green!

I think Trilogy were made by John Letters if I am not mistaken.
Good clubmakers.
X14 are very nice clubs for a new golfer.
Callaway are a top club maker and that is a good choice.
Just check the grips are ok ,they are the only thing you hold , warm water washing up liquid .and a little sandpaper light scrub works wonders
Enjoy your practice, there is some very knowledgeable people here so good advice.

Trilogy are by John Letters, as clubchamp mentioned above, they're a progressive cavity design, deeper cavity in the longer irons, shallower cavity in the shorter irons and wedge. There are at least 6 models of trilogy irons, but I think that they're all progressive cavity designs.

My personal view is that they're a perfectly decent club, but most on here will tell you that they're too old and you should invest in something new that makes life easier for you.
You pays your money and you takes your choice.

Yes I agree Trilogy were a good club ,I remember having a set myself.
Just depends on condition of them, new grips works wonders.

I still have a Letters Golden Goose putter in my garage .
It’s very simple putter but still nice to practice with for a change.

Simple works!
I've got a couple of Golden Geese, an Acushnet Bullseye and a Swilken 909 in steel in the same style.
Not played the Swilken yet but the others are all great putters.
