Camillo Villegas is currently 150th on the PGA money list for 2012 and has already earned over $330,000. That's just in prize money and doesn't include European Events.

What I am saying is that lots of them can make a big cheque this week by playing in the States while all the top players are away.
I'm sure lots will be thinking sod the Open, let's stay here and win some money

And in general, they only need one good week to make enough money to secure their card on the PGA Tour.

Which was kind of my point. If the current 150 top earners in the US have made more than 300k so far this year then money shouldn't be a consideration in terms of playing the Open or not. If it is then its just plain greed IMO. Yes 1 or 2 players may be in the position of having Qualified for the Open without having won much money but the vast majority have qualified due to how well they have done in the recent past. The current 150th ranked player has earned over 330k and it's only July how far down that list do players qualify for the open to be classed as scratching around for a living?

There's an idea - someone get hold of a set of accounts for a Journeyman Pro from a couple of years back.
It would be interesting to see how much they actually get to keep from the $000's they win

in order to qualify the following applies:

The top 50 on the Official World Golf Ranking. This key sweep up category means that no member of the current elite of world golf will be excluded.
The top 30 in the previous season's PGA Tour money list and European Tour Race to Dubai (which replaced the Order of Merit starting in 2009). Most but not all of these players will also be in the World top 50.
All previous Open Champions who will be age 60 or under on the final day of the tournament.
All players who have won one of the other three majors in the previous five years.
The top 10 from the previous year's Open Championship.
Any past open champions who have finished in the top 10 in the previous 5 years.


Now even being ultra conservative the current 100th ranked player on the US tour has earned over 710k. So if you've qualified for the open it's highly unlikely you are short of a few quid. Any player choosing to play elsewhere if they are eligible then is just plain greedy.

I wasn't talking about those who had qualified for the Open.
I meant those who are on the bread line who make more money
in the States than they ever would in Europe.
That was my reason why some may not travel outside America too often.

My apologies then as I thought we were specifically discussing the Open. I agree in that case then that the journeyman pro can make a lot more money in the states.

Only just heard the Woods interview and I think it's nothing more than an honest assessment of the layout. It is brutal and penal but there again so is the US Open. It is about keeping it straight (Westy???) and so if you can get home with a 3 wood or iron off the tee and an iron in then I think that will be the order of the day.

Nothing the R&A or the green staff can do with unseasonally heavy rain flooding bunkers if there is nowhere for the water to go. Of course there will be a few top names who'll struggle and slaughter the set up but the R&A don't try and trick courses up so I think it will an exciting and interesting spectacle

The R & A test the length of the rough at The Open by throwing brand new Pro V1s into it and sending children in to find them. Three children still haven't been seen since last Thursday.
No children were lost really
