i joined my new club around 4 months ago as i wanted to start playing in competitions ect. The club i joined is known locally for being friendly and that you can turn up and get a game with anyone.

Well i play twice in the week and then at weekends when comps are played. I have been down so many times now in the week and never got a game with anyone, i have asked several ppl if i can join them but im fobbed off with excuses. It took me a while to get my handicap rounds in as i couldnt join on with anyone. Obviously on competition days you are put with ppl so thats not a problem and most of the people i have played with in comps have been friendly.

Also there is so many seniors at the club that in the week its always packed even at 7am where there is around 16 ppl waiting on the tee so it can take an age to get round!!

The course is going downhill, people always complaining about the condition of the course, fairways, tees, greens. And its like this with most people you play with.

After your round you can go into the club house and have a beer and chat and everyone is fine but im starting to think about moving clubs as this isnt all made out to be what it says on the tin!!

It's never nice to hear that a club isn't as welcoming as you thought it would be when you joined. For me the most important thing about this great game is the cameraderie it generates.

I've got to say the one thing at my place is you can almost always join a group. When I joined as a single I turned up on the Saturday morning mentioned to the Pro I was a new member - was overheard and invited to join a group of 10 for their Saturday roll up and have been playing with them ever since.

It takes a bit of time to become part of the furniture in a club I'm afraid. As for the condition of the course, many courses slowly run down into winter condition at this time of year. I take it that it was in reasonable nick during the summer ?

It's just the way some people are really. My club isn't top both, but it will do. The juniors are really snobby , and the ones with low handicaps are very arrogant and think they own the damn place. The senior are all nice, but I have run across a couple of bad ones . The pro's are nice ,and you usually get to play with people if you're a single.

If you dont like your club, then look around, try and find one that fits you.

i have played with the group in the roll up on sundays once and that was ok but was never asked if i wanted to play the following sunday. I understand it takes time to be part of the furniture but when you have been there for 4 months and every week your going round on your own it isnt enjoyable.

The course wasnt great through the summer tbh, the greens were nice but the fairways and tees wasnt great. They have killed the grass on the fairways and there is so many bare lies.

Im not going to name the club i play at im just interested in peoples opinions

My club has a lot of roll ups both at weekends and weekdays. Some are pretty cliquey but the majority are pretty good and welcome a new face along. My advice would be to ask if your club have any of these and when they go out and then try and get a game that way

do it then!!! dont mean that in a bad way either. Don't suffer for the sake of it

enjoy your golf, don't make it a burden/chore
at the end of the day its a hobby not a chore :)

"I really enjoyed that lads. OK if I join you next week?" As a new member, you might have to be a bit pro-active.

This could describe many, many golf courses this year. THEY may not have killed the grass, the dry weather might have done.

the weekends aint the big problem its in the week that i play alot. I can go join a course and play everyday with my dad.

Sorry to go all soppy but I'd love to have the chance to play a round of golf with my dad again. Go join where he's at. It's a no brainer.

Agree, If you dont know anyone it will take a while. When I joined Royal Musselburgh it took me a year to really get involved, there are so many groups playing, esp weekends....now I'm turning down games week in week out. In saying that I would find it hard to continue if I didnt fit in somewhere....I'm sure there is a slot somewhere, you've just not found it yet.

Guys it sounds like his at the Leicestershire GC. I played their in a society the other sunday and the fairways were the worse thing I had ever seen. Best way of describing it is it had a agricultural form of cancer. I hope I am not wrong in guessing the club because that would mean there is more then one course with terrible fairways...lol

bigfoot, as said above it can take a while to get known in the club, but i hate to say it some clubs out there dont welcome new bloody well.

As a junior the course i was a member at was awesome, if you was on the putting green or in the nets a group would hook you into a joining them even if it was only for 9 holes, it was great, it actually got to a point where you fealt bad for wanting 9 holes on your own. great for new members.

in 98 i joined dukes dean as it was on the way through from work to home so made alot of sense, in 3 months i had one game with a member, every other game was with guests. you could wait on the first tee, on your own and a 2 ball would come up,
" have you got a game"...
" nope looking to join in with someone as im a new member"....
"ok do you mind if we tee off while your trying to find a game"..

in the end i cancelled the membership as the club hated new blood. when i spoke to the secretary, he said he was well aware of this problem and was the biggest reason for people cancelling memberships.

Id look to see if there are any roll ups you can join in with to meet new people, if not it could be worth bringing it to the captains attention if you like the club.

im not at the leicestershire lol!!

Yeah i left there as i wanted to start playing in comps and wanted a club with a friendly reputation. As i said i was told that i could just roll up in the week and get a game with someone no problem. Trust me i have tried hard enough to get a game with ppl in the week to no avail. Ive gone down at the weekends to join in with roll ups and ive had the impression that they didnt really want me joining on.

Originally my dad didnt want to join as a member at his club but now he wants to join up as a member with me as i had said im thinking of going back.

Its basically the 2 municipal courses in leicester where you can play at either one on the same green fee costs. So you pay 590 per year and you get 2 courses to play at and i would become a member at one of them to enter comps ect.

Aaahhh I gotcha, not played either for a long time. Where abouts in Leicester do you live as there must be other altneratives although having the choice of two courses is great if they are in poor condition and you can't get a game it's pointless! I must admit I've not struggled at mine since joining and have made some good friends and we just join up if we see that the other has a booking. I would say 90% of the time if a two or three ball are there I will get invited to join them.
