Thinking of going Sonos - Persuade me otherwise...

Looking at maybe a Sonos Play:1 - but does it fit with my wife's requirement - which is simple.

She listens to music on her iPhone through her Spotify account and wants to be able to listen to it 'properly' - in the kitchen - in the bedroom - in the garden - wherever the fancy takes her. So light and easily portable.

We do not have any such bluetooth/wireless units at the moment - so no legacy constraints - and may well expand into a 'system' in time - so best that the solution to her requirement is not a stand-alone solution that cannot be expanded or integrated with other units or components in the future.

Is the Sonos Play:1 a good starting point? It's not clear to me from this thread whether the Sonos Play:1 will work directly with the iPhone or whether you need a 'base' unit as well as the Sonos Play:1

And alternatives?

Fortunate to have the budget for the right unit.

As has been said the Sonos needs to be plugged in, and have a wireless or WiFi network connection.

If that doesn't rule it out, you can play Spotify through the Sonos app and play to the Sonos from the Spotify app.

When you have multiple speakers, the Sonos synchs the sound so all units are playing together perfectly (that was the original clever selling point). If you have the budget, multiple Sonos Play:1 units for the rooms required would be a decent option. I find these speakers are the best sound and price combination and the bigger Sonos speakers (soundbar for TV excepted) are not worth the extra cost. If you need more sound for a bigger, you can set the Play:1s up as a stereo pair.

I like music, but I'm not an audiophile, so others may disagree or suggest better options.

If I'm not mistaken all the Sonos units need mains power and are not battery operated, so by the sounds of it bluetooth speaker with a rechargeable battery might be a simpler/cheaper/more flexible solution.

I have a small waterproof JBL BT speaker which works fine for a similar use outside and is waterproof.

OK - so she looked at the nice cylindrical JBL one but felt she didn't really need a waterproof speaker. The power constraint is one thing to consider if she wants to listen outside - probably not a Mandatory requirement

I have a Sonos speaker in the kitchen/diner (the £150 one not sure which model) and a Playbase for the TV in the lounge. Was going to buy Bose but preferred the sound quality of the Sonos. Using the Sonos app on my phone I play either radio or Deezer and can use each device separately or together. Love em

Given I'm not planning on the Playbase - would the Sonos speaker work stand-alone with the iPhone?

Have a look at the UE megaboom

I currently own the bose SoundTouch 2 and the UE megaboom

Head to head I prefer the UE as is a much deeper sound.

Battery lasts about 15 hours and it’s waterproof and shock proof.

So you'd have the Sonos App on your iPhone and you can go to the Spotify app and tell it to play through the Sonos App - or tell the Sonos App to pick up fro the Spotify App (don;t know which way round that is) - and the Sonos App on your phone distributes Spotify-sourced music to the Sonos Speaker(s) you have?

Lucky we have the budget (Mrs Hogan's NHS retirement lump sum :) ) to buy two - maybe even three - Sonos Play:1s - if that's a good solution. Mrs isn't really an audiophile but appreciates a 'good sound' when she hears it.

I'm sticking with my vinyl and turntable :)

I have the Sonos 5.1 surround sound with Sub and it's amazing, REALLY AMAZING! I also have a 5 which is brilliant and a 1 in the kitchen which is all I need in there.
Sonos does have a few teething issues that are annoying (drops reception and you have to set everything up again) the biggest problem is you can't get them repaired so when they break that's it! With this in mind buy them from somewhere that gives you an extended warranty (John Lewis 5 years or Richer Sound 6 years)
They too have a forum which you might want to look at to see the problems people are having (https://en.community.sonos.com/search/activity/recent)
Having said all the above I would still buy more, the sound quality is better than BOSE and you are beginning to see some bargains out there.

Enjoy
