Mrs H has struggled with a very nasty, wet cough since the nasty virus got her early January. On Thursday she finally acknowledged that she was struggling to get up the hill where we live. Once upon a time she was a fitness/dance instructor doing 20+ sessions a week, and a year ago she got up the hill like a spring lamb, way ahead of me. Everything about her smacked superfit for her age.

On Thursday she made a decision to give up smoking. But rather than a dead stop she’s set mile stones she’s aiming for. It’s only 4 days she’s halved her consumption, and has already allocated targets for the next week. Knowing how she’s approached this in the past, and how many times she’s failed, I’m more than pleased.

BBC4 retrospective of Ellie Brooks on her turning 80 (last year) on this evening.

She did some cracking R&B stuff in the late 60s with Vinegar Joe and then MoR by herself through 70s and 80s, and is still singing strongly and well…well she was last year. Though I always recognised it was good, her MoR stuff wasn't really of much interest to me at the time. However in my advancing years I can enjoy it for what it is…class MoR pop.

Her greatest hits albums Pearls and Pearls 2 were massive sellers so might look to pick copies up as they’ll be cheap 2nd hand vinyl.

Pearls 2 sold on the back of the very successful Pearls. It’s ok but I wouldn’t rush to buy it again. Saw her a couple of times - fantastic voice and connected really well with the audience.
