Things That Gladden The Heart

You could say that for petty crimes as well. Kill them and they won't do it again. It is not a sensible point of view.

When a murderer is considered a danger to the public he/she is never released.
No, sorry you have got me completely wrong, I’m in no way comparing a petty criminal to a murderer.

I take it the Justice Service have never got it wrong and released a killer who’s killed again?

You have a common vengeance fantasy.
Brutal treatment or physical and mental torture, are things of the past. No prison officers should ever be required to mete out such treatment.
There is a line that must not be crossed when imprisoning people in the UK.
Your line is imaginary and will never be legislated for.

The most brutal criminals should get the very basic

Single cell

Three basic meals at day

Water

Books

And the ability to go outside for a set period

No television , nothing that can be classed as a luxury

Whilst I’m not suggesting it is your view, there does nevertheless seem to be a widely held belief that prisons are some sort of holiday camp.

I spent some time managing a team of police officers who investigated crime which happened in prison establishments, and when I was setting that team up I had several meetings with the governors of the five prisons within our force area. I had guided tours of all of them, and was a regular visitor.

I can tell you without hesitation that they are hell holes, the kind of places where the vast majority of us would struggle to survive a week.

I’ve done healthcare work in maximum security prisons - where as well as being on the premises, you naturally see the prisoners health records so get a pretty open window in what their life is like and what might befall them - as well as dealing with some of the consequences. I can only endorse this view - Cat A prison is a terrifying hell; while the CSU and CSC (segregation units) are almost beyond imagination. Any lengthy prison sentence is no sort of getting away with it.

I’ll bow out now as I accept this is not gladdening the heart.

I disagree but I’m not going to comment any further.

Yet in reality we have seen people released and committing serious crimes again

And you can’t compare someone doing petty crimes with the sort of people bent discussed here
Read my words again, "When a murderer is considered a danger to the public he/she is never released."
I am clearly talking about whole-life terms - as you say, "the sort of people being discussed here."

Those released are those who have served their term or released "on licence" to serve the rest of their term, with conditions, outside prison.
We do not give whole life terms for all murders. And yes, there are cases of repeated murder. This does not justify locking up all murderers for the rest of their like.

Murderers and those committing multiple murders and monitored very carefully for a long time. The possibility of release is a long and thorough process. If you think it could be improved, put your opinions in writing to Secretary of State for Justice. Remember to give all details of your research into the subject and your professional experience. (Please take no personal offence to my facetiousness - I am merely using your post to spout my opinions)

It is an interesting subject for "lay" discussion.
But a return to medieval practices, as some continue to suggest, is not something I can read about or listen to without feeling a need to respond.
It is something that we might "feel" is justified, but it only needs a little more serious thought to dismiss it as not practical or justifiable for a civilised society.

It’s time to move on

Not sure if this should be here or random irritations.
My eldest daughter just messaged me to say she is going to book a spa day thing for her Mum for her birthday.
I thought that’s nice, while we are there I might get myself a massage.

She then said can I have the Grandson for the day as she is going as well 🤣.

Gotta love how daughter’s minds work.

It was my son in laws birthday yesterday and he loves ā€œBens Cookiesā€. We ordered him a special tin of 10 cookies, got the thank you message with a request for me to have a word with my Daughter as she opened the present on his behalf whilst he was working and ate one of the cookies. Her defence was she is in charge of quality control at home so she was doing him a favour by opening his gift šŸ˜‚

In similarity to your post and something that gladdens my heart...

My wife is off to a spa day this Friday for her bessie pal's birthday, at a hotel over 90 mins drive away, I'm going too but.... the hotel also has a fantastic golf course(s) and I'll be playing Thurs, Fri and Saturday this week and it just happens to have my favourite hole on this island.. I hope she enjoys her spa!
