Things That Gladden The Heart

So not really big lengths of roads then

It seems research shows that reducing the speed using traffic calming measures actually reduced emissions

No, not roads of 100+ miles, obviously.
What's a really big length of road and who suggested they were ever subject to 20mph limits?
Certainly not me.

Was trying to understand the thinking or suggestion behind 20mph speed limits causing more pollution than 30mph limits ?

Seems research shows it’s actually better emissions at 20mph

it’s obviously safer at 20mph

So not sure there are too many if any negatives of a 20mph limit in villages , heavily populated roads , near schools or roads which are used for school kids in the mornings

20 mph limits are in my experience in short bursts - you don’t travel for miles at 20 mph

Pollution argument when it comes to speed limits is very very thin
Every town and village in the Scottish Borders Council area are 20mph zones, you can drive for miles to pass through the 'bigger' towns as they start well outside some of them, doesn't bother me too much but strikes me as a bit overkill

Being honest I never understand the issues people have with speed limits

Most of it seems to come from people just not wanting to drive slow

There are some areas that prob don’t need it and that’s where they will prob put up a camera but a change 30 to 20 isn’t too drastic

The A5 here has gone from 60 to 50 and the level of moaning is through the roof

Same issue where I live people seem to think a speed limit is a target to aim for instead of slowing down and driving safely according to the road conditions of which many are single lane but 2 way traffic roads. The amount of accidents as a result is ridiculous yet despite all that they aim to hit 60mph rather than the suggest 30mph.

It feels painful in areas where there is no risk and if people don't see the point, they wont follow it. I agree with them being outside schools but having them wider spread is unnecessary.

I also agree with @Neilds It is so slow that I have to keep checking the speedo, taking my eyes off the road more than I would normally.
Most newish cars have a speed restrictor facilty, though I do agree that when set on 20 it's really frustrating in certain circumstances. Speed awareness courses though, leave you in no doubt as to the damage incurred when someone is hit and I've witnessed it twice over the years and it's traumatic just seeing it.
On another occasion though, driving on the 70mph M4 at 2.30am - a 90 minute journey - I set my speed to 60 and just cruised. No traffic to be seen. Then I hit a 50 zone (for about a mile) and got zapped.

It's bloody painful being on the receiving end too. 20 years, and still in pain every day.

I'm all in favour of 20mph around town. Just think how much more time it takes to travel 10 miles across town... less than 10 minutes difference. Surely people are willing to give up less than 10 minutes more?

It's probably less than that...
A few years ago one Police force did a fairly unscientific but useful test
They sent 2 of their cars and drivers out on a 40 mile trip that included town, A road, B road, a bit of motorway and country lane driving.
Car 1 had to stick rigidly to the speed limit or less, Car 2, if it was safe, could exceed the limit by 10mph.
They set off together
Obviously Car 2 got back quicker...but how much quicker..?

97 seconds...over 40 miles and there was a minute and a half between them.....

I like this.

No need to speed.
Simply start your journey sooner.
And relax.

This is actually really similar to a seminar we had a work last year about it road safety as some of our wagons rightly so are restricted to 60mph on major motorways.

We had highways England in to give a talk and it worked out that over a 60mile road trip you only save 8.57minutes of time doing 60mph compared to the limit of 70mph. But fuel consumption was far better and driver reaction times were better and safer.

Finding my earbuds that I “lost” a month ago. For some strange reason they were in an obscure pocket of my work backpack. I have never used them at work🤷‍♂️

It was the speed awareness course I attended a few weeks back that has made me much more aware…which after all is the point of them. I’m now an assiduous adherent to speed limits.

Several decades ago, back in the days of the "W" word, with my Boss in the passenger seat, we were lost in Ashford. Suddenly we saw a sign and he said "Look, that way!"
At the exact moment we set off the lights changed and I'd drove through them.
I saw the police car at the head of the lights to my right and said "Oh bugger".
Sure enough, he whipped in behind me and pulled me over.
I said "I'm really sorry, we were lost and looking at the signs. It wasn't a red, it was an amber, so can you use your discretion this time, please?"
He said "The problem there is, if anyone else saw it, I'm in trouble" and wrote the ticket.
Several days later, producing my documents at the nearest nick, the desk man looked at the ticket, with the PC's details, and said "Oh, bad luck. Did he have newspaper stuffed in his helmet?"
I said "Pardon?"
He said "You did have a bad day - he's brand shiney new. Probably just been let loose." and laughed.
🤨

Today I had to have my annual Shave for work, due to a kit test we have to be clean shaven for it to work. So begrudgingly shaved of the beard for a smooth clean face!

Turns out ended up being a confidence boosting day, several of the ladies around where I work paid me compliment’s, including one of the lasses all my lads seem to drool over asking who’s the older guy !! I’ll take that for a win over the lads as a)it’s a confidence booster and b) showed the young boys and old dog does have new tricks 😂

Won’t be shaving again till this time next year though because I hate looking like a child 😂
