I have the sad news to bring to you at this festive time of year that Gleddoch GC former treasurer John Hall was found guilty of stealing £7.000 from a period March 2008 to April 2009 when he was the Club's treasurer .

The sherrif ordered him to payback the money he stole .. Mr Hall had been a member of the Club between 1985/91 and after a break , rejoined in 2000 ..
Mr Hall was also given 15 hrs community service Unpaid .. work

Scummy bas ,,, The man should be banned from every UK course .. and never be trusted or respected !!!

Unfortunately he isn't the first and won't be the last. I don't see why the Golf Union shouldn't issue a lifetime ban in such circumstances. At least we will be sure they are out of the game for good.

Golf clubs are businesses and most are run by volunteers basically on trust. Abusing that trust is one of the worst things any member can do IMHO.

Sadly it is happening all too often. A couple of clubs near to me have had similar thefts and haven't even reported them to the Police. They have just allowed these people !!!! to walk, leaving behind large debts for the decent members to pick up the tab.

I am with Fyldewhite that there should be some means of preventing anybody caught stealing from ever being able to be in a position of trust again.

Sad story. Was it because of outside financial problems or sheer greed. If the former I have a shred of sympathy but at the end of the day theft is theft. I would hope the club have got rid of him. I'm sure his crime will spread through word of mouth so its likely he'll struggle to get in elsewhere especially clubs that still have the old proposer and seconder system

there is a lot off this going on all over, but it is the member who put these people into the jobs that you have to feel for, they must find it hard to trust such people in office again,it must take a lot of hard work to win the members around again

Am I reading your post correctly?
A friend of yours took money from your club.
You got him out of trouble by paying back what he took before he was found out under the assumption he wouldn't do it again. And now he's done it again?

Thieves are thieves, though in a members owned club I wonder how it would pan out in a full blown court case, being part owner may pull out some loop holes.

Thieves are everywhere, and far more are dressed in nice clothes and have a reputable CV than there are those in a hoody with holes in their arms.....its just a case of catching them.

you thought you were helping, he just saw it as getting away with it. he'll do it again, in fact he may already have done to someone else - parasite.

An all too often occurrence these days. I don't think clubs protect themselves enough, one person should not be left in charge of such a sum of money alone.Secretaries and club officials should have deputies or assistants shadowing them much more closely to stop this happening. Also more regular checks on the balance of accounts by other members of committees. Sad.

Have you ever heard about being guilty by association (i am not saying you had anything to do with this) you must report this now before he does it again and he will without doubt. He has implicated you in his thieving and has probably done the same to others.

We got rid of our General manager a couple of years ago after he was caught with his hand in the til. He was only nicking 125 grand, so it wasn't that bad.

As Treasurer of my golf club (an unpaid volunteer) I feel strongly that this guy should be issued a life ban. I am willing for my books to inspected at any time by the Committee who have put thier trust in me. Unfortunatley Stealing will continue to happen probably more so in these hard ecomonic times. I would urge any club where this happens to have no hesitation in calling in the Police. Fifteen hours community service is nothing but at least the club will get it's money back.

an all too familiar story I am afraid. Many private clubs rely on unpaid commitee members and respect is duly given to people who give up their free time to make the club run well. This makes it hard to suspect people you think are doing their best. A lifetime ban should be the minimum these people deserve!
