Damn you Golf.

I don't mean that, but my heart was nearly broken Sunday, so any advice is welcome.

First comp at my new club (second comp ever) and first time I've played off the white tees, quite a different course. Made a few errors I'll chalk down to experience but I can't forgive the short putts missed, here's the story.

On 3 or 4 holes which play very differently off whites I messed up club selection (or more accurately wasn't confident enough in my selection to execute the shot). One landed me OOB, one in a plugged bunker which I managed to get out of by putting it right up against a fence. You get the picture. Picked up a few 7s for my trouble.

But I played well tee to green for the most part (Ive relaxed a lot and not over thinking things, last year I tied myself in knots with technique and swing thoughts, on the course now Im trying to just trust the swing I have and it usually works pretty well most of the time), started the round putting well enough was 1 over gross after 6, hit my lag putts pretty well all day thanks to Bobs advice on tempo, and then.... I missed 8 putts inside 3 feet.

Yeah, you read it right. 8, 8 smashing 3 putts that should have been 2. 41 putts in all, only 1 one putt saving par, all the others 2 putts (hit over half GIRs, not close to the pin but on or fringe). 34 points, winner on 40, had I been able to putt from 3 or 4 feet I would have won it comfortably.

So before I put myself trough the torture of the Captains Drive In this weekend does anyone have any advice on how to sure the yips? Basically I've lost such confidence I under-hit them, afraid to go past for fear of missing on the way back. That results in me pulling and pushing them, I could even feel myself slicing across the ball - hideous. I tried listening for the ball to drop, but when I look up its still bloody there :) On the practice green I can knock them in if I just hit them hard, but there's no consequence to missing those putts and nowhere to practice those nasty downhill sliders you do on the course...

In typical fashion someone will give me the magic cure, Ill nail every putt on every green this weekend, but take 6 shots to get there.

;)

Go to putting green and try putting 20 from 3 foot 10 from 4 foot and 5 from 5 foot. If you miss one you have to start again. This will ensure you see a lot of short putts falling in but also adds the pressure as you near the end knowing you will have to start again from the beginning if you miss. I used to end every practice session in this manner and if I was tired and bored and frustrated, the pressure built, all I wanted to do was go home and put my feet up but each new start added pressure upon pressure until all I could do was forget it all smile and hole a few putts then go home :)

what putter do you have?

Do you have an iPhone? if so d/load the free Ping putter app to identify your swing path (I thought I was straight back and I'm actually strong arc so changing to a toe down putter)

do you miss these 3 footers consistently on one side?
Hows the lag putting?

Thanks chaps -

Strangleybrown - nope! We don't play gimmes, always hole out and always keep score as if we were in medal play, I guess there's less riding on it in a social game than my first comp!

Mulligan - I've heard that drill before, trouble being my club is 40 minutes drive away so only get there for games, I have a putting mat at home and its not the same thing but will give it a go, thanks chap

Darth - Lag putting was bloody awful until Bobs tempo drill, now Im confident enough about putting long ones close but it got to the stage Sunday when I would rather be 10 foot away than 3 - felt I had a better chance at making those! Madness. Not so much missing one side constantly, just weak putts that crawl apologetically up to the few inches around the cup and say "don't mind me, I won't trouble you"

I don't have an iphone, will ask my playing partner if he wouldn't downloading the app. I have an Odyssey Tour #5, 33inch (I'm 5' 8"). Its a nice putter, I never blame it, could it really have that massive a difference from 3 feet?

The cradle for the phone is quite expensive, but I agree it is a good tool.

Bang goes my theory :) :D

But your point did get me thinking, I'm stronger at match play and now I'm wondering if it's because the hole is won before I have to hole out! Oh dear, can you use one putter for long putts and a belly putter for short ones?

;)

I find it's the pressure you put on yourself that can make these so hard, especially when you're on a bad run.

I've had the same problem myself and you come to dread "that length" that you kow you should make but fear you won't, which makes each one even harder.

What I've found has worked for me is just to accept that I'm going to miss one or two of these in a round, or even several. It takes the pressure off and I don't come down on myself so hard when one misses. The stroke becomes smoother and I think more about holing it than missing it because I'm not going to worry if I miss it. As a result my short range putting has improved immensely.

(Having said that it still pisses me off big time when I do miss one!)

6 foot and closer was my weak area, and for my hcp, i guess it still isnt quite good enough, but i watch some of the video's on youtube from Dave Stockton and one paticular thing has really helped.

in one video he says "outside of 15ft, you don't expect to hole, and most times, you will get it close or in without really trying. inside of this and most golfers miss more because they try and hole the putt. Just pick your line, one/two practice stroke and then get straight into the putt, dont dordle over it, just hit it, like you would the longer putts and you will hole more!"

I tried this on the short ones and i have found it really helped me. i now don't doubt myself as i don't have time to re-think about it. it still takes a bit of confidence to do it, but i can tell you, it does work, just need to be brave and try it.

Curls - "putting out of your mind" by Dr Bob Rotella

Just ordered for my mate on amazon -1.70+2.80 delivery. Can be read in a few evenings so perfect to start on a monday and get the head right for saturday.

Had seen this booked mentioned loads since I joined here last July - cant recommend it enough.

Thanks for the advice chaps, will have a look at that youtube video and order the book, heard about it before just forgot about it again, nice one.

I have a V-easy, it really helps and I think my technique isn't that bad, like I say once Bob helped me out with my tempo the long putts improved dramatically so I can't be doing too much wrong, its all in my head and it might well be that I don't expect to make the long ones so hit them better, hopefully these tips will help me get over it!

Cheers, Curls

Book ordered, video watched, then watched one with Ben Crenshaw too along a very similar thread to Stocktons. I think I should definitely take something from their approach and remind myself that my 3 foot putt is not to win the Masters

;)

Sound.

I find when I get tentative on short putts I have a tendency to have too long a backswing and decelerate into the ball causing pushes and pulls.

Try a few with a short backswing. Real Short. So short that you think you have no chance to hit the ball hard enough to reach the hole (or that's what it will feel like anyway).
Put another ball 6" behind the one you're hitting then make the putt without hitting the second ball.

Oh, and as you've already tried, don't look up. When we look up early to see how we've done it's too easy to look up before you've hit the ball then you find yourself trying to steer it towards the hole.

Not as daft as you look ;)

It could well be something as simple as this ^^^
You're ok from 10 feet but sadly, you use the same backswing for the tiddlers so you end up slowing down.
If the bcakswing is short, you will naturally swing through the putt longer.
So short back, long through, not long back short through.

Thanks Region/Bob, if I had to call it I'd say I do have too long a backswing from that range. Interesting...

Go to the practice putting green, select a hole put a tee pointing towards you in the earth above the cup and try to drill the tee into the ground by hitting three foot putts..... simple :-/
