I don't normally like statistics on golf, it kind of ruins the mystery, but while waiting to go play today, I have run through my last round, where I thought I played ok (it added up ok anyway).

Fairways hit = 7/14 (4/10 with driver, 3/4 with 3w)
Greens in reg = 4/14
Par three gir = 0/4
Sandy saves = 1/2
Shanks = 1
Scuffed chips = 1
Pars = 13
Putts = 27

I think I would be better off joining a course where there is just a putting green. A quick 18 on the putting green, then to the bar. I could be unbeatable.

Looks like my irons are a problem.....

Murph, the driving stat is most revealing. How much distance do you lose with the 3-wood off the tee, because the accuracy is fantastic. Maybe next time leave the driver out of the bag and see what happens.

What was your score?

Jings, Murph. Can I swap my putting for yours! 27 putts! What do you play off?

I'm a stats man, too. Been keeping them since May last year and have identified my problems. Chipping and putting. My first round this year was on 2nd Jan.

Fairways 9 of 13 (69%)
G.I.R. 11 of 18 (61%)
Putts 34
Birdie conversion 0%
Par Scrambles 3 of 7 (43%)
Score 76

Guessing I'll be working on the chipping and putting again this year!

I really do think these things help. You can download a free trial of a scoring program from this link.

Do you find Strokesaver easy and straightforward to use ?

I'm looking to get something like this as my last package was lost when the PC was reloaded and the company are no longer trading so I cant get a validation key for the old software.

I certainly used to get alot of info from my info that I input into the system.

At the moment I'm running an Excel workbook as a basic form of record.

DCB, yes.

Once you have filled in the pars and stroke indices for the holes of your home course it really is straightforward. I have about 25 courses on mine. Surprisingly quick and it shows just what you want. Well worth the free one month trial to get the hang of it.

Great par stats! and fantastic putting (27!!! how good is that!)
Did you only play 14 holes???? can one not count g.i.r. on all 18?

I tried the strokesaver......lost it when I reformatted....won't be getting another free trial....too expensive for the full version (for me).

I still can't get over it...13 pars with stats like that - We should rename you mr miracle!!

I'm with J_F on this one: Scoresaver 2 is worth a try, especially if you bother to record where you are missing fw and greens (i.e. long/short etc).

If you look as his stats for the single round this year:
Fairways 9 of 13 (69%)
G.I.R. 11 of 18 (61%)
Putts 34
Birdie conversion 0%
Par Scrambles 3 of 7 (43%)
Score 76

What this says is that Driving and Hitting greens is really top stuff. Putts at 34/round could possibly be explained by the condition of the greens at this time of year and the fact that his GIR was high. Birdie conversion 0% is disappointing. J_F has had 11 birdie chances and converted, er, none. Par scramlbes at 43%, however, is pretty good. This means that of the 7 times that the green was missed, a par was scrambled 3 times. Scoresaver 2 also relates these stats to a "handicap standard" so it will, for instance, tell you that you drive like a scratch golfer but putt like a 15 handicapper.

One other thing (cos I do like this software and I'm in rant-mode...) which is great is that you can record an incomplete round. If you go and play a quick 9 holes then you can still record this data. Other online sites, most notably strokeaverage.com (which is vg in some other respects) require a full 18 holes to be entered.

Aside from stats software rants, "Gasp" also makes a great point; If your driving accuracy is poor, leave the driver at home and use the three wood. How much distance will you lose ???

My chipping and putting is normally pretty solid (which I never practice, as I struggle to concentrate, and it just gets worse). I play off 12, so 7 over, nasty double on 17 when had an attack of the shanks.

Driving wise I loose about 15 yards with my 3w, so on some holes I definately need the driver. On the other hand, my 3w is Mr reliable.

Ironically, I played nine on friday, 8 gir, and putting was rubbish.

Saturday was back to usual, driving all over the place, and irons all fat and left. 34 points though, so still on target for not shooting less than 30 every time out.

I'll have a look at the analysis software when I get a chance, as it does sound useful. Right now, I guess hitting some irons down the range is where I need to be, as although my driving isn't on the fairway, it isn't too deep in the bundu.

We are going to have to decide on a bit of software and give it a go for 2008, call it a concerted effort for improvement...(or paralysis by analysis :D )
