Just watching Gordon Banks funeral and it's fair to say he had the send off he more than deserved. They have shown the clip of " The Save" against Pele and what a save it was. Read an excellent piece on how he anticipated it bouncing off the hard floor. But it got me thinking what other "phrases" are there associated with legendary status or moments in sporting, or come to that matter any status. On the red wine so there may be some Rammel latter. Cheers me dears.

I had the great pleasure of Gordon's company on the golf course a number of times some years ago and had the opportunity to sum up " The Save".

We were playing a friendly 4BBB match and on our 13th I was giving Gordon a shot. Cut a long story short, a hooked tee shot, a recovery shot that went into the brook but climbed out the other side, a chip that would have knee-capped a grass hopper and a 40 foot putt resulted in Gordon winning the hole with a 4 nett 3.

This was during a World Cup and I said to him that I had seen "The Save" again on TV.

"Never have been able to understand how you made it" I said "Until now. You must be the jammiest bugger I know".

His response was to roar with laughter; that was the measure of the man.

No ego, no side and genuinely one of the nicest people I've ever met.

Some of the older forum members will remember Dan Maskell and his "oo I say what a peach" when a player hit a great pass or fantastic shot. I was playing with him as a junior and had been very nervous as he had a fearsome reputation at the club. I was being polite, spoke only when spoken to and was being fastidious with etiquette. The 5th is a short par 5 of around 285 yards. I hit a great drive that got over the horse track some 50 yards short of the green. He turned round and uttered those immortal words, turned back and pegged his ball up. I was biting my glove as I had the schoolboy giggles but it broke the ice and he was a real gent.

Every time I watch that replay, I still think that the ball will end up in the back of the net

Like I say Jensen just seen it again, but one thing I never saw before was the reaction on the England No6 ? Bobby Moore. It is worth watching again but keep your eye on him.

Oh to play one day with a character and a legend, Dereck Randall at our place would be the closest. Having said that, I played with a guy at Tyneside last year on Man in Blacks day and he was lovely.

My favourite piece of commentary unsurprisingly comes from American sport. 2004 Stanley Cup in hockey - deciding Game 7 - Tampa Bay Lightning are clinging to a 2-1 lead late in the game against the Calgary Flames when Nikolai Khabubiln makes a simply incredible save. Cue the legendary Gary Thorne.

"That might be the one, that might be the one"

15 years later, still makes the hair stand on the back of the neck the same as when I watched it live.

Sorry but this post really sounds like it was written by Alan Partridge. "Needless to say, I had the last laugh!" :ROFLMAO:

As Steve Coogan is the least funny man on television and, thus, having never watched Partridge that is completely wasted on me.
