My wife & I have booked a holiday to Kissimee (near Orlando) in October. This will be the first time we play in the USA.

I was browsing the net looking for suitable courses to play, and was intrigued by the variety of tee colours. I've seen Gold/Blue/White/Green, Blue/White/Gold/Red, Black/Blue/White/Silver/Red, Teal/Black/Blue/White/Yellow, and a few other minor variations.

Not really important - we'll just play off whatever tees we feel are appropriate, but I'm curious. Do individual courses just pick whatever random colours they feel like, or is there some meaning to them?

No regulations, so free to choose what they want.

There's a bit of variety in UK as well, but most go for 'traditional' White, Yellow, Red with maybe a Green for Seniors/Juniors and a Black (or Blue or Green) for Championships.

Though not as much as elsewhere.

You will get a better idea when you get to the course and note the yardage for each colour. They also have slope ratings for each on the card. Be aware that on many courses there are long carries over water from the tee. Enjoy.

And when you get to the 1st tee box you might even find the tee marker is painted half one colour and half another because its used for two categories i.e men's general play tee doubles as the women's comp tee

I was a member at a Florida course(s) for a few years, don't worry about the tee's they are simple, it's the snakes and the gators you need to watch out for, generally they only keep the little un's, once the gators get to 8 feet long they are relocated to the handbag factory. The snakes sometimes need a bit of spotting so watch yourself in the rough. The turtles leave you alone but have a nasty snap so keep your fingers away. The raccoons are just scavengers but most of all beware of the american golfer if he suggests playing for a few bucks, make sure it's strict rules of golf, otherwise you will see mulligans, leather wedges, jigging the ball in the rough and bunkers and many variations thereof.

Enjoy your trip there are some good courses in and around Orlando, the level of service is usually of the highest standards too.

My wife will love that - NOT (see, already picking up the US lingo).

I think there will need to be some serious research required in order to pick suitable courses.

We have played out there for the past two years and will be our 3rd time in November. The tee box colours make not much of an issue and the score cards give you an idea of what you should play off.

However it is funny watching the Americans playing of the black Tee's (furthest back) and struggling to drive past the tee in front, When i ask why they are making it so hard for themselves they reply " we have paid for this course and will get our full monies worth out of it"

Anyway what courses you playing?

US courses are very relaxed about which tees you play from, generally the rule is whichever you are comfortable from. I've never been stopped from using the back tees. However, the yanks tend to play from forward tees which I always find amusing considering how many beefcakes there are over there

That's a bit like my philosophy that the more shots you take, the less you've paid for each one :D

No idea yet - as mentioned, will have to do some research.

There is some belting courses out there and quite cheap too, as a tip look up/register to the following websites:

www.golfnow.com (good cheap tee times that you can book 14 days in advance, however you can get some real crackers on the day or day before)

www.dealcaddy.golfnow.com (same owners but they do advanced deals that you can book and include some crazy deals too, for example played Windermere with lunch, range balls and buggy for $40 each last year. there deals are on a daily basis so start looking around June time onwards)

Finally keep an eye on Groupon (Orlando section) as you get some deals on that too, however not always the top courses but still pretty good though.

Hope this helps, any questions let me know,Me and the boss are pretty high handicapper’s but love playing the courses out there and are made very welcome too J
