Taming the beast!!!!

Following on from the post about golf holes that you fear, my response was the Championship course at Royal Dornoch, which in 15 or so competitive rounds I have never come even close to playing to my handicap.

Well played there last night with my mate who’s just joined after 2 years on the Struie course and had never played the championship course. He’s off 3 and never took me seriously about how difficult it could be on and around the greens and if you got out of position of the tee. We played off the whites on a beautiful afternoon with a touch of breeze ( that’s windy for you parkland boys down south) 3 birdies one on stroke index 1 for a 77 gross, he shot 85 and had 2 four putts and a few 3 putts to boot.

Really chuffed, might play it a bit more now I’ve got the monkey off my back. And my mate enjoyed it despite the highest score for a few years.

Might even go again next week!!!! ;) :p

Well done, it is a beast of a course, but one of the best you could ever experience.

Played it for the first time at the end of June and was lucky to birdie the last two for a 79. Got off to a bad start with a treble bogey 6 at the 2nd, absolute bitch of a hole!

Did you have a sheet showing pins - must be impossible to get a ball close on really severe pins.

no they have a bit on the card now that tells you pin position of the day, A,B,C.D etc.

the few time i've played in opens the css has been high 76 the last time (par 70)best score before was 90 and i didn't play that badly. Its just course that can really bite you if you are out of position or you don't get the right side of the flag. My mate for instance on 11 (446 yards) hit a great drive into the wind, then 3 wood right at the flag he thought i wouldnt be too far away, got down the and it was right at the back and the flag was front he had a 30 yard putt down hill walked off with 5 scratching his head. Were as i didn't hit a good drive only 200y into the wind too far to reach so layed up pitching wedge from 100 one putt par ;)
