Tabloids- Does anyone with even half a brain believe a single word they write?

Is there actually any totally unbiased media out there at all ?

With the print newspapers then the FT is about as unbiased at it gets. And as Foxholder said The Independent as well, although I suppose people could argue that has a liberal bias. With the broadcast media I'd argue that compared with other countries they are all not that bad. ITV seems mostly there to please whoever will advertise with them and not overly follow a political agenda. The BBC always get accused of having a left wing bias by right wingers, but to me just because they do not peddle a right wing agenda that is mostly followed by the printed press, does not mean they have a left wing bias. To me if you want an informed and neutral opinion as it is possible to get then the BBC as good as you will get nowadays. Sky news is not too bad considering it could be Fox news, but you get the feeling it would love to go further to the right if it could.

If I was being paranoid, which I am, they I would say I do find it slightly amusing that the current government seems to be doing all it can to slim down the BBC. The make up of the commission they have appointed is mostly like appointing Bernard Mathews on a commission on what to do with turkeys at Christmas. Neutral it aint. But they are more than happy for the written press to be dominated by owners with a very conservative bias. But as I said, that's probably just my paranoia, and the attacks by the government on the BBC has nothing to do with a political ideology, but based on the logic that a strong public service broadcasting organisation is bad for the the country. In the same way the relentless push to make all school academies or free schools and out of the control of local authorities and into the control of private money making empire building organisations is best for the children. And is not another ideologically driven agenda, yet again playing politics with children's lives and futures. No siree (and yes I know it was a Labour initiative originally, and in it's original form it was a good idea to get strong schools to help out the ones that were failing the children);)

Whilst an audience remains for papers they will continue to be produced.

Says something that the Mail online is the most popular news website in the world. Scary.

What it says on the tin really.

The typical British tabloid is, IMO, nothing more than a vile comic, written by morons for the benefit of ill-educated or frequently bigoted cretins.

Unfortunately they are read by more than just this group - however it does rather sadden me that many seem to form and certainly express their political and socio-economic views around tabloid headlines.

So does this mean that the Sunday Sport headline of a London Bus being found on the moon was just made up? I'm truly shocked if that is the case, I mean how could these journalists spread such blatant lies?

I think the problem is the reader if people wanted facts then the paper that was more factual would be the most popular, people want drivel and gossip and to be told what to think, it is easier than having to have your own opinion.

I often get the Sunday papers for the football results. Are you saying that the results are made up? Does this mean Middlesbrough won promotion last season but were cheated out of it by the lying media?

I'll get, maybe, 2-3 daily's a month. Do I believe what's in them? Don't be silly, but at least I know if there's been an earthquake/forest fire/tsunami. I'll just not believe the numbers of dead quoted - many years ago I was going for an interview, and was advised to get a few newspapers as I would be asked about world affairs. The Daily Mail quoted 5,000 dead in an earthquake, whilst the Daily Express quoted 10,000...

I buy my newspaper based on either the quality of the crossword or cartoon strip.....dependent on whatever mood I'm in.

The Glasgow Herald crosswords are enjoyable and are just taxing enough for me to enjoy whilst not being impossible to complete.

Unfortunately Striker is my 'cartoon strip' of choice so I have been known to decrease my brain capacity by half in order to enjoy the latest going ons with Warbury Warriors in The Sun.........and yes, I believe every word that comes out of Eric Openshaws mouth........mind ye, his wife's not to be trusted!

:)

On the (admittedly very few) occasions where I have had some detailed knowledge on something major enough to be in the national press or on the TV news I have been staggered at the poor reporting. Misrepresentation of facts, selective reporting of facts as well as wrong "facts"!! Mostly over hyping to "get a story". I NEVER believe anything I read in the papers straight off. I always question the story and try to see the other point of view. They are nearly always reporting to get a reaction, a talking point down the pub or whatever but are hardly ever objective balanced and fair.

Self confessed reader of the scum, love the problem pages and the striker. After that none of its true.

The day that disgusting rag is closed down forever will be a day to celebrate

That paper has damaged people's lives

You guys are so clever! We should be so thankful that you have pointed out the folly of our ways and given us a chance to form Guardian type 'Socio-Economic' views and cast off our Bigoted and Cretinous Daily Mail skins.

If you are looking for inspiration (which you probably aren't) someone else thought up a way of filtering out the 'morons, ill educated and cretins'. They called it Lebensborn!

But you can't deny that tabloid headlines aren't always the most factually accurate and that some folks simply regurgitate these often rather sensationalist headlines. Guardian and Times readers probably do the same - but maybe just regurgitating less sensationalised headlines.

I just Google'd your forum name.

Tabloids are there to appeal to the lowest common denominator. News comes a distant second. Factual news even further behind

I'd argue when the red tops are concentrating mostly on celebrity gossip they are pretty harmless, as at the end of the day it's all just fluff and nonsense. It's certain other papers that allegedly trade in 'proper news' but are actually just forwarding their specific agenda through a policy of fear and hatred that are more worrying to me.
