Sunday opening

These trading rules in England are madness.

I think they have been relaxed from 4 hours opening in the last few years.

Sunday afternoons / evening, English towns are like ghost towns.

I know. Families spending time together at home or visiting relatives instead of shopping. Just weird.

Joking apart, it is not madness if it what you are used to. We accept it, personally I would not want it to be more liberal. If we want to go shopping on a Sunday there is plenty of time to do it, plus the other 6 days of the week.

What is the situation in Scotland then? Not just the legal opening hours but the opening hours that actually happen (I don't mean people opening illegally but just because you can stay open certain hours it doesn't mean that shops actually do)

There is no restrictions on when you can open.

Most big towns and all cities will have a supermarket open 24 hours, 7 days a week.
Even smaller towns will have a main supermarket open 8am till 10pm 7 days.

Villages will still have a Co-Op or Tesco Metro open till 10pm every day.

And you know what, it's convenience. Can go and run round the supermarket late on when it's quiet & the kids are in bed rather than condensing everyone to be shopping at the same time.

I know you get used to it and you plan accordingly. But there is no way we would go back now to shorter opening hours.

In the good old days it would be either golf, and then between 18-30 Sunday morning footie, followed by Sunday lunchtime beers but only until 3.00 as the pub shut, home for Big match (recorded on the VHS recorder) and Sunday lunch. to be honest I am not one for trawling around the shops at the best of times so while I appreciate the convenience of getting odds and sods if I run out I don't feel the need to religiously go and shop each and every Sunday. I can still remember shops, including our independent supermarket closing midweek so I appreciate the changes in the law.

It is like anything though, once you get over the initially excitement of having more time to shopping it becomes the norm. I still prefer to spend time doing other things and if its not golf would rather spend it with HID going out for Sunday lunch somewhere nice (again though pubs are open longer so this has become a more relaxed affair) or go out and visit somewhere.

I find it a bit sad that, for some, the peak of a Sunday day out is attending a Tesco Extra...

If we need some Sunday retail therapy we'll go to one of the nearby High Streets where independent family run emporiums abound... Can get just about anything you want from the very early hours to its really too late to be out... All from attentive well mannered owners/staff... Multiculturalism at its best...

For me personally it's Sunday League footy in the morning, Premier League on TV in the afternoon. In Summer though maybe an extra round of golf. :sneaky:

You got to love those who support Sunday trading, until they or a family member has to do it, for no extra pay, and it ruins holiday plans or the like.

I have always taken the view that if you’re wanting to shop on a Sunday, you should also be prepared to work yourself on that day for your normal pay.
I’m not, so I don’t shop on a Sunday.

I have some sympathy for shop workers but, from a selfish point of view, Sunday opening is essential if shops want me to use high street stores instead of online retailers. Shops are shut when I finish work, Saturday is when I play sport (previously rugby, now golf) and so Sunday is when I can get to the shops. Will use local stores if I can but if they are shut on Sunday I head to Amazon. Sunday opening is necessary for the high street to survive as many just cannot get to the shops on what are viewed as traditional opening hours. I expect many would be better off closing mid week rather than opening on a Sunday.

I laughed in the pub one Sunday as a new Tescos was being built that was going to open on a Sunday. "who wants to go shopping on a Sunday" I laughed. The landlord gave me a stare and said EVERYONE!!!!

How right he was.

Was in Glasgow at Xmas a few years ago for a quick break. We were checking out of our hotel early morning had were stuck for ideas of what to do as we thought everywhere would be closed.

Couldn't believe at 9am on a Sunday all shops were open. So different to Northern Ireland

NI lives in the dark ages

Sunday is just another day.
Why should it be different from a Friday or a Monday.
Crazy that a Tesco supermarket is forced to be closed by local politicians whilst a Tesco extra half a mile away can open any time it likes.
The days of 9-5 Mon-Fri workers are long gone.

I was working in a Operational Role when 24x7 opening was muted. I put a note round the team asking who would consider night and evening shifts. I was inundated with applications....for a variety of reasons. Completely surprised me.

It seems a bit odd that government should dictate when shops can open....

One of these years you’ll be able to go shopping at 8am for a gay marriage cake on a Sunday, and get an abortion on the way home...

Have to agree. Worked a lot of retail jobs when I was going through various levels of education and everyone wanted the late shifts. You really do not do much from 6-10 on a weekday evening and so to work that shift, sleep normal hours and have the day to yourself was great for many.
