Killing a bit of time while it's raining at Wentworth and came across this vid :

If the link doesn't work, go to the clemshaw channel and find the most recent. It's called something like 'fix your slice and compress the ball.

Now I know that Shawn Clements is not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm curious about his idea re. having a really strong right hand grip. Although I've been playing a few years and have become reasonably competent (low double digits) I've always struggled a bit with what to do with the right hand regarding grip position in hand, wrist break on backswing and impact etc etc.

He sounds plausible, but I can just see my ball heading left at speed...

When a golfer thinks about compressing the ball, the idea is to hit down on the ball.
That will be achieved by a steeper angle of attack.
What most golfer do to increase the angle of attack is to swing more from the outside to inside.
Couple that with a strong grip???
You then have a golfer who is trying to cure his slice by swinging more from out to in with a strong grip.

The right hand grip advice was helpful to me - I've been looking at what happens with my right elbow and arm, and this seems to make a bit of sense. I'll try it next trip to the range.

I posted a query about this a few days ago and got no response at all!

!! I was beginning to think the same about this one. Maybe it's because my link was duff, or the vid was too long.

Either way, I'd be interested in what you found.

Thanks for your comments, Bob. I'm not sure what why people obsess about compression to be honest. I think I'd just end up digging large holes in the ground. But I AM concerned about making a good powerful contact with the ball, and that's where this seems to be aiming. My first thought is the same as yours tho - going left fast.

Haven't found anything at all. I try to have my arm in the orientation the video shows, but this seems to bring in a lot of tension as I twist my right wrist anticlockwise to keep my grip. If I let my grip roll clockwise, I under the club, I lose the tension which can only be good, can't it? I feel like I'm making this all more complicated than it needs to be. Tried to go to the range yesterday to experiment, but couldn't get on as they were cutting the grass!
