Strategy, does anyone have one?

I have a strategy for certain holes on my own course depending on my drive, there are also a couple of holes now where I take a 3 wood instead of a driver to avoid potential trouble.

So a player decides to play defensively, with say a tight drive with OB left or right and a narrow landing area. In theory a prudent move, and we'll assume he has a shot, so in theory this fictional 430 yard, is now a par five. My original point is what happens if despite looking for the safest route, he makes a rank bad swing and still goes OB or puts the tee shot in trouble? Similarly, if he wants to be brave and take it on and it doesn't come off, what does that do to confidence and thinking.

You talk in terms of bravery and defensive plays - these aren't strategic decisions; they are clearly emotional.

Strategic decisions are based on probability not emotion. Also you have to accept that odds on plays don't always work, just as outsiders win.

The outcome of any strategic decision is irrelevant to the judgment of that decision; it's relevance is to the probability to be used when making the next one.

Call it emotional or call it strategic, whatever decision a player makes doesn't guarantee success. What I will agree on is that it's all about minimising the damage, playing the next shot on it's merits and not compounding the problem leading to double and treble bogey's
