Strange grip problem

Hi all.
I use a interlocking grip which is very strong.
I can get my left hand into the correct neutral position on the club, but I find it impossible to get my right hand into the correct position, if I try it is extremely uncomfortable & impossible for me to play any kind of reasonable shot.

This grip causes me to occasionally hook to ball, to counteract this I have been playing with an open stance.
This set up is hopeless & causes me all sorts of problems.
So the other day, I had yet another attempt during a practice session to correct my awful grip.
After trying for an hour or so & getting nowhere fast, I suddenly found something that worked for me.

I found that by gripping right down almost to the bottom of the grip, I could indeed obtain a nice looking neutral grip which was comfortable & produced a nice accurate shot with a ball flight that I was happy with.

I am 5ft 9ins tall & use off the shelf Ping G15 irons (black dot, standard length & lie)
It got me wondering if my irons are just too long for my height?
I just don't understand why I find it so difficult to grip the club properly unless I grip down?
That said, when I did grip down, I didn't notice much of a loss (if any) of distance, but I definitely gained a much nicer ball flight & my accuracy was brilliant.

Any thoughts?

Grips too thin or most likely given what you've said too thick for the size of your hands. Assuming that is you know how to grip the club which is mostly in the fingers and not in the palms of either hand. (not being funny, sometimes if the grip is lying in the wrong place in your left hand it's difficult to get the right hand on properly)
