Can a player stimp meter a green on the course (not practise green) before play?
No, in stroke play that would be testing the surface of the green by rolling a ball on it, which would be a breach of Rule 7-1b.Can a player stimp meter a green on the course (not practise green) before play?
The Stimp meter is an inclined chute from which you release a ball and measure how far it rolls. If that is not testing the surface of the green I don't know what is! In answer to your last question, no you wouldn't.Interesting, is taking a measure of the green speed the same as testing the surface?
I guess it must be but just wondered if the purpose of rolling the ball plays any part in the rule of testing the surface under the Practice rule 7
i.e if I drop a ball accidentally with no intent to test do I still get the DQ penalty?

Yup happy with my understanding of what a stimp meter is, just queering whether 'measuring' is part of 'test the surface'

Edit: just read in decisions that your caddy can do all the surface testing/ball rolling/stimp measuring needed without any DQ for the player, happy days!
Rule 7-1b. Practice before or between rounds in stroke play. That is correct and the caddie can also practise on the course on the day of competition.
But I also see no problem with the player testing the surface of a green on the day of competition. Rule 16-1d only prohibits such actions "during a stipulated round".
But I could have missed something

He didn't specify that it was match play either! :mmm:He didn't specify that it was a question for a strokeplay event!

Sorry Delc you are of course correct as Rule 7-1b not only prohibits practise but also the testing of the surface of the green. This would of course only apply prior to a strokeplay event and not prior to marchplay.

even if you could, why would you? analysis paralysis springs to mind.
i expect aimpoint may have something to do with the answer

Rule 7-1a covers match play. Basically you are allowed to practice as much as you like on the competition course before the match starts. However at club level this may not go down too well with the other members! So why only answer half of the possibilities?
