Sporting Idol

"Super" John Mcginlay. An absolute Bolton legend who i idolised as a kid. Has the Bolton badge tattoed on his arm his feeling for the club is so strong. He was a proper footballer.

Andrew Flintoff. Watched him come through the ranks at Lancashire being called fatty and having ths piss taken out of him all the way up to demolishing the Aussies in the Ashes and becoming the best all rounder in the world at the time.

Theres probably more but these are the main ones for me.

Golf - Seve and Faldo - complete opposites but both had plenty to aspire. Seve the complete maverick, naturally talent and creativity, Faldo disciplined and eeked the most out of what he had

Cricket - Sir Viv Richards and Malcolm Marshall - got to watch both many times when a kid and both were just so naturally talented (similar experience to Ron had with Kallicharan with Larry Gomes many years ago, was a lot of exceptional cricketers from the WI and to a man they all seemed to be pretty decent blokes too)

Other - Martin Johnson and Richard Hill from rugby, Bergkamp from football, Daley Thompson from athletics

Iron Mike Tyson era 1987-92

Probably get stick for that but if there was any single sportsperson over my liefetime that you'd want to watch at their sport (not their personal lifes) then he'd be it.

Lewis/Klitchkos/Ali etc may have been better boxers but no-one put the fear into opponenets like Tyson and he turned slow lumbering heavyweight matches into super fast intense and exciting drama.

Second would be King Kenny Dalglish, every Scottish lad my age would possibly agree!

Jimmy Greaves for me,whilst Shearer was one of the best for England Greaves was without doubt the best goal scorer Britain has seen.

My old dad is from Salford, stood on the Strettie for years and worships a few United players, in particular Tommy Taylor ( 112 goals in 166 games) and The Lawman (227 goals in 485 games) He agrees with you about Greavsie ( 366 in 528 games)

My sporting idol is someone I never had the fortune to see play, he had stopped playing the year I was born!

Joe Baker. From looking at his goalscoring record, simply terrific wherever he played (301 goals in 507 club games) 17 year old debut for Hibs against Hearts...scores 4 goals.Obviously, I never saw any of that, but in 1990 when my club faced the ultimate penalty of extinction, Joe was there to rally the troops and fight off the take over of Wallace Mercer. He was at the hands off hibs rally at the usher halls and he couldn't have done more.A footballing legend, but more importantly, a gentleman.

Steve Redgrave.

Much was made of Chris Hoy beating his medal haul in London last year but Hoy has numerous events at each games, Sir Steve had one shot at Gold every 4 years and (with his crewmates) nailed it! One of the world's sporting icons not just Britain's.

Football :- Stevie Burr, Paul Gascoigne, Peter Barnes, Gordon Hill
Golf :- Seve, Jack, Tiger, Sergio.

THAT'S IT!

There are no other sports

Alan Clarke.
As a kid my dad used to take me to all the Leeds home games during the late 60's early 70's. I must have seen some proper footballing legends during those years. Apart from the Leeds players I cannot remember who apart from Johan Cruyff.

Sniffer and Cryuff were two of my heroes as a kid, along with Bjorn Borg and Steve Ovett.

For me it has to be Sir Bobby Robson. There aren't many true gents left but he was a role model to lead all role models and even the sporting greats admired him.

Freddie shepherd killed bambi

Ben Hogan double-fracture of the pelvis, a fractured collar bone, a left ankle fracture, a chipped rib, and near-fatal blood clots to then play only 6 tournaments in one year, win 5 of them including three majors. Tiger sore knee my arse.

Muhammad Ali

George Best

Lee Trevino, brought something into golf that will never happen again….fun.

Steve Hislop on his day the fastest man on a superbike. Faster than Rossi.

Colin McRae, who changed the face of Rallying.
