To set the scene, when I first started to play properly I bough a set of Nike TW blades now I found these alright to use and got down to a 9 handicap after starting at 24. Once I got down to 9 I struggled so decided I would go for more forgiving clubs and bought a set of TM tour preferred cavity backs. Even with these I was hitting them straighter but struggled to get an shot shape but they just havent got the feel of the blades.

So after playing like a mug all winter and wondering where my next 30+ score will come from I had the bright idea last week to mix my iron sets together. My bag was set up with Driver 3w then a 2 3 4 in hybrids, then 5 6 7 in the TM and 8 9 PW in the blades, with GW SW and putter.

My playing partners looked a tad confused but this really worked for me. Anything within range of the blades I was able to attack the pin the feel felt great. Anything going in longer admittedly I didnt feel comfortable attacking the pin but I knew I could get a solid strike out of them.

Has anyone else done this? Is this a short term fix or should I keep with it if I am confident with it?

The irons I recently bought are a combo set, bladed from 7-PW then a small cavity for a bit more help on the 4-6 irons. That said the 2 types of irons I have are far closer in style than the 2 you are pairing up. One worry I would have is with TMs strong lofts you may have too big a gap between your 7 and 8 irons too

many pros use a cavity back 3 and 4 iron. every little helps.

ive used nike pro combos for years. nothing fills me with more confidence than a bladed short iron.

I'd use whatever I felt would get me the lowest scores, that's the aim of the game after all. I'd use ladies clubs if I shot better numbers.

Ive got a fitting booked in early April for the new Cobra Amp Cell Pros. They describe themselves as a "flow" set. The 3 iron has a small cavity and then the cavity slowly develops into a full blade by the time it gets to the 9,PW. Similar to the Nike Pros. I think they're beautiful but I may be biased....

Got my eyes on thsee aswell great looking things.

I still love the look of the pro cb and mb irons too....

I was quite keen on the Nike Pro Combo which is exactly like the OP's set with cavity backs going to bladed short irons. I do like the idea of this and wonder why manufacturers don't offer these in more ranges

To be honest the gap between the 7 and 8 was something I thought would worry me but I am comfortable hitting 3/4 shots, but then what I have found is if its a between the 2 I will always take the logical approach to try hit the middle of the green and go from there.

I actually tried the jpx 825 pro and didnt like them, I tried last years model and thought they were nicer but they didnt have a shaft to suit me so left them on the shelf.

I recently bought a set of TM RAC combo's from the for sale section on here my intension was to leave them at my holiday home as they were only £80. But they are that good that they have stayed in the bag and my Cobra S3's can't get a look in.

I can't recommend them highly enough and you can pick a set up for around £80-125 the bladed irons are butter soft give them a go.
