'Spider' Studs or Old fashioned Studs

What are your views on them?? Are the old type studs still legal??
I ask because I am thinking of returning to the old fashioned studs.While walking down a slight slope, I have already gone 'A*** over T**' on two different occasions this season with these 'Spider' types and giving myself a good clout both times. (Shoes are FJ Softjoys and are only 4 months old)

I often find soft spikes to be worse than useless. Used Pro-Stingers last winter and will do again.
Only good thing about softspikes is that they're quiet!

Same as that. I have a plain black pair of FJ's I use during the wetter months as they are so easy to keep clean. These are fitted with Pro Stingers and have never given me a problem.
During the drier months I have a couple of pairs of white FJ's that I have retained the normal soft spikes in and again, I haven't really had a problem.
The only course that I have played recently that was "soft spike only" was Forest Pines, but most coures will allow normal metal spikes.
The metal ones (as mentioned) are noisier so you have to be mindful of where you are walking when around the clubhouse or first tee...

Another vote for the pro stinger. However with so many FJ's I usually only put them in a couple of pairs for the winter. They definitely give more grip in the wet. The biggest problem I have is making sure I pick my feet up on the greens and don't leave any scuff marks

Right,........ back from the golf a few hours ago, and managed to stay vertical for the whole round, the strong southerly wind kept the ground a lot drier than previous Sunday mornings.
Having read all the advice, I have looked up Pro Stinger on Ebay and would like to ask, if my Softjoys are less than 6 months old, is it the Tri-Lok or the Q Lok ???

I think most are Q lock. Take one out and go to AG or your pr shop and compare threads.

I dont like the soft spikes and only use them if the course has a soft spike only policy.

Otherwise its good old fashioned metal spikes with the Fast twist system for FJ shoes.

Black Widow studs are just about the golfing equivalent of slick tyres.

As others have said, Stingers are the way to go becasue it's now almost impossible to get pure spikes anymore.

That said, normal champ soft spikes are good for most conditions, as are the new adidas soft spikes.

Admittedly not as good as proper spikes or Champ Stingers, but markedly better than black widows.

No but being a dedicated follower of fashion in the same veing as Smiffy, RickG and Murph I like to have a few pairs to match my outfits but tend to wear more conservative colours in the muddy conditions

I have used only soft spikes for at least five years, summer and winter, and I am 6 ft 5 and 15 stone and have never slipped.
They also protect the greens too. Our club is soft spike only during late March to October and the greens are superb. If ever someone does wear metal spikes, you can see the damage around the flag and the roll of the ball is altered as it slows.

I am very friendly with a greenkeeper from one of the top courses in Scotland and he would strongly disagree with that statement. We play together several times a year and he wears metal spikes.

The best way to check is to remove one of your old studs and have a look at the thread. If it has a 3 start thread, which I'm sure it will have, it's the fast twist/tri lok you want.
