I have to say surely the speed was the contributory factor whether you know the road or not. Either way a tragic loss of two young lives

I did some mad stuff as a young man, but a Ford Escort 1.3 with 64 bhp was unlikely to go over 80mph anyway.
I've been up there around NSL (that's 60mph, most likely)....can't even think how you could do 100....
Can't help feeling the 200+ bhp had something to do with it.

We have similar stuff 2 or 3 times a year.
One from a few years back...
4 kids in an Escort coming off a single carriageway bypass tha's 60 limit.
Up to the roundabout and turn left.
Now I'm a reasonable driver and I've taken this roundabout in the dry, in a wide-tyred GTI whilst completely sober at 50 and nearly dumped my load on the floor.
The driver took it at 68.
That one of them got out is a miracle.
The Police Crash Investigator said in Court that even on a Blue light run he would never have even thought about taking that corner at more than 50.
They weren't "asking" for it but doing stuff like that you have to expect it.

It's mad isn't it?

I got overtaken by a concrete mixer (no joke) on one of the main routes through Telford. (Just think Milton Keynes).
At the Randlay roundabout he "was" trying for the 3rd exit. However, he lost it, went up on only one side of wheels, nearly rolling it and (after somehow leveling it out) decided going straight on was safest. w.t.h.?

Driving around as I do all day I see similar most days.....

A Hot Friday afternoon is definitely the worst time.......

Sadly speed kills...

If people want to drive quickly there are plently of places to do so that won't risk others lives...

Thats what I did... Stock cars & hot rods on the ovals... Got rid of all my adrenaline...

I am not a slow driver on the road but neither do I take risks with speed...

My mate was driving up a dual carriage way when I car veered over from the other side and missed him and his wife by a fraction. The other car ended up on its roof,he reckoned they were doing 100 plus. 2 died and my mate pulled the driver out of the car, minus his bottom half,he'd litterally been cut in 2 and died in my pals arms. He's still seeing a psychologist to try and get over it,all because someone wanted to get somewhere 2 minutes faster

A few years ago a Police Force did a very unscientific but interesting test.
They took 2 of their unmarked cars and 2 drivers.
They left from point A and travelled to point B - a distance of about 40 miles covering all types of roads.
One car had to rigidly stick to speed limits
The other, as long as he wasn't endangering others could break limits.

How much sooner did the speeding car get to Point B.......?

Top gear did the same thing and they admitted they got to the office no quicker! It's so true.

I've been upto 100mph on a private road. M55. That was fast enough thanks, not on country roads. Since being pinned to a wall by a bus I drive down lanes, especially ones I'm unsure off at 30mph.

Fwd + big bhp = Fail

There's a reason rally cars are 4wd

It's a point isn't it?

There's a bend on spaghetti junction (a slip road) which I take enthusiastically more often than not. Can't do faster than 40 in FWD.
Easily managed at 60-70 in the old Beemer. I'd imagine an Imprezza/Evo could do it at 80.

(No science in that, as I don't own a 4WD, but I've driven some).

Worries me with my two eldest now driving, I made a habit as they got near to driving age to point out every collection of flowers or wreaths on the roadside or attached to a tree, and there are a frightening number when you start to look for them.

Something seems to have clicked with them as they both drive pretty steadily, at least when I'm in the car with them.

Driving back up the M6 on Monday evening after Hillside, I was passed by a bike in the outside lane that had a pillion passenger who was wearing football shorts and white gutties. The bike was of course not observing the speed limit. If they'd come off ...... outcome was unthinkable.

97 seconds is the answer so you're right.....

Add in the extra fuel needed to drive at those speeds and it really is a no-brainer....

But you can't tell them - they just don't listen.

What's the point in Clarkson et al saying that speeding doesn't get you anywhere quicker when on the next part of the programme they're seeing how fast a car can go round corners with smoke billowing from every wheel........

Depends on the intellect of he viewer.

I know a car can go round a corner at 100mph sideways when you scream...POWAAAAAAAAR. But, put 2 sets of traffic lights and a pedestrian crossing on that corner and you won't get round it much if any quicker regardless how fast your car is.

Traffic management, the great equalizer

I nearly got run over the other evening walking through my local park.
Something caught my attention out the corner of my eye and I looked to see a small black hatchback doing about 60mph over the grass. As there was a tree between us, we didn't see each other until he was about 30m away from me. He did a 180 in front of me just missing me. As his car was spinning round his left tyres hit the path I was walking on and the sudden extra grip nearly flipped the car just 1-2m from me.
He was in his late thirties and he had a nervous looking women in the passenger.
He wheel spinned off back in the direction towards the road, I tried to get a photo but he was too quick. I waved down a police car that I saw a minute later but I was a rubbish witness as it all happened too quickly.

I think track days are great way for people to try driving at speed in a safe(er) environment. It would be a better outlet than trying to race through the local park.

I can never understand why they build cars that can travel at 150mph when the sped limit is 70mph.
IMVHO anyone who buys a high performance car is a fool.

About 20 years ago in a trial, a cyclist got from Bristol centre to Southampton centre quicker than a HGV
