For the past two days my back has been killing me, the base of my spine feels as though I have knot in it which wont loosen off at all, I've been doing stretches, had hot baths and even sitting with a hot water bottle on my back but its not easing off at all!

Any suggestions other than buy senior flex clubs and order a wheelchair!

Welcome to the bad back club.

muscles in lower back have stiffened to protect an injury to the disc probabaly. Even if it feels muscular it is probably a wee tear in a disc.

Rest up and take strong ibuprofen to reduce inflammation.

I have been seeing an osteopath with my back recently. Apparently more than half of lower back pain is to do with the glute and hamstring muscles being too tight and pulling the lower back rather than a problem with the back itself.

Suggest looking online for simple glute stretches and try these everyday to loosen everything

Sounds like what i have just got over. Had the same symptoms on and off for a year or so. After a couple of days rest felt ok again, and could play without pain.

This time it dragged on and then went into serious spasms across my lower back. I gave in and went to the Docs. Three lots of painkillers, and three weeks later, am hopefully ready to 'play' again.

If it persists more than a couple of days get it looked at.

I had the same thing for a week or two in mid summer, the Dr told me to take 3 ibuprofen every 4 hrs. You need to take alot for a short time as the anti inflammatory is not very strong so the body needs more of it.

Clearly I am not a Dr, but it did sort it out and I did not feel like it was going go when he told me. I was very saw and it seemed like it was going to be bad.

My chiropractor told me to get cold onto my back when it's tight.
She said that heat makes it feel better but cold reduces the swelling.

I started with a sore back nearly 2 years ago. I had 12-15 visits to the osteopath which made no difference to the pain at all. I then went to a back specialist and it turned out to be athritis of the hip! so its difficult to diagnose anything for yourself. I had a new hip resurface a year ago and it's brilliant -moral though - go get it checked properly if it doesn't mend soon with rest. Also, anti inflamatories gave me real stomach problems with continued use, so be careful.

Good luck

Craw, im not sure if this will be relative but ive struggled with my back over the last few years and after seeing a chiropractor it turn out i had twisted my pelvis.

After many stretching and twisting and clunking it was all back in line and straight and i was rocking pain free again, then the pain was back and twist was the pelvis again. After many chiro sessions this year a lesson with a new pro found what was twisting my pelvis, I wasnt turning my hips through the ball but sliding them, and this was putting my back out of line. I spoke to my chiro who is also a golfer and asked " would sliding my hips through the ball instead of turning cause the problem ive had for over 2 years...." and it was confirmed.

If i get the pain on my right side it means ive basically twisted my pelvis left side forward, and have to lay on my left side and pull my right leg over and rotate my shoulders the other way to click the pelvis back in, if the pain is on the left then visa versa.

I do have a load of excersise and stretches but trying to explain them via here is gonna take ages, you have my number if ya need it feel free to give me a bell. but i would drop into to a local chiropractor and let him have a look.

Last year I had a bad back for a few weeks. went to the quck a couple of times and was told rest and ibuprofen, but with no joy.

Then I eventually fluked having an appointment with a locum, who specialised in back problems.

Mine happened to be a problem caused by dissociated pain from a groin strain, caused by a poor driving position in my car.

Weird, but true.

Yeh i agree with gil emmot, get some freezing cold gel to rub into the area deepheat although it feels ok at first will make the muscles contract, but the cold gel(or a packet of frozen peas)will do the opposite relieving the pain, get better soon....
