I've just played today for the first time since early november and only my 12th round of golf, and I had two birdie putts on par 3's from within a foot. The first one on a 174 yard slightly downhill hole, I hit a lovely 6 iron which pitched 2 inches right of the hole and ended up about 8 inches away, and 7 holes later I hit a 9 iron on a 140 yard, downhill over the trees hole which pitched around 10 foot past the hole and span back to about a foot. I managed to sink both the putts for 2's and having another birdie on one of the par 4's, and 5 pars I managed to put my best round together with an 82, though some of the holes were on the forward tees. The mad thing is even though I only started playing last year and don't even have a handicap, I normally do practice quite a lot, but since the start of november i've only had one 100 ball range session with a pitching wedge and 6 iron, and about twenty shots in the nets before the round. I wasn't going out expecting much and after a double out of bound 8 on the par 4 first and a 10 over 43 on the front nine, I thought i'd score my usual low to mid 90's, but after my best ever 9 hole score of 39, 2 over par coming in, I managed to get the 82.

Forward tees or not that's still a good effort, obviously there's something in this practising business! - my mate hit an ace at the weekend - forward tees and winter greens so hole was playing about 100 yards - he shanked a wedge, shouted a few obscenities after it only to watch it pitch, take an unlikely kick left and roll over the piece of field masquerading as a green and drop.

eh? when you going to q school then?

I think everyone has had a 9 like that.

When I was in college at 16 I played a round of golf at a local course I once had a summer membership at about three years before, 3 months for £25. I did play a little golf before I stopped for 7 years, only played in the summer aged 12-16 so going out then was a rarity.

Shot 56 for the front 9, felt very silly but the guys I was playing with didn't mind too much.

Got onto the back 9 and shot 40, just 4 over including a birdie on 17 and a par on the really narrow and tricky 18th.

Golf is so weird, I have yet to beat that and only repeated it twice last year. The course I am at now is about 700 yards longer though so maybe that is one reason.

Yeh well played... you're right to be pleased. Ever thought of doing a bit more practice? ;) LOL

Yes, bunker shots, i'm hopeless, left a shot in one today. As i'm not a member I don't have the facilities to practice out of bunkers often.
Thanks for the comments everybody, neither my friends or family are interested in golf so it's good to tell somebody about it.

Is that a hint of doubt their mate, fair enough. Maybe I would go to q school if I was a teenager who was born with a silver spoon in my mouth, but at 30 I doubt that will be happening. If your doubting my yardages, you havn't seen the course I play, I usually hit a 7 iron 150 but there's some severe hills at the course. If you weren't doubting me then I apologise, but then what was the point to your post.

No need to get quite so defensive, 9ft of backspin in only your 12th round of golf. I wish I could do that etc etc

Yeah, now I just need to learn how to control it. To be honest with you i'm not the kind who thinks there's anything to get excited by backspin, in soft conditions like today I aim at flags if the shots on, so that was actually an overhit shot, I hit two shots to the middle of slopy greens today which both span back of the greens. Even though I havn't been playing long, i'm quite a clean ball striker and my swing must just impart a lot of spin. If you seen the state of the grooves on my dci wedges you'd wonder how I even get the ball to stop. By the way I normally use callaway tour is balls so if your after a bit more spin yourself i'd recommend them.
