NICOL'S 59 MAKES NE ALLIANCE HISTORY

KRIS NICOL IN THE MONTROSE MERCANTILE CLUBHOUSE WITH HIS
MEMORABLE SCORECARD FOR A 10-UNDER-PAR 59 TODAY

Fraserburgh tour pro Kris Nicol today became the first man in North-east Golfers' Alliance history to return a score of 59.
He did it over the winter course at Montrose - one of the oldest links layouts in the world - which is only 5,566yd long and has a par of 69 - but, nevertheless, it was a fantastic display of precision golf by the 28-year-old who plies his trade on the Alps Tour.
Nicol's figures were:
OUT - 4 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 4: 29 (five under)
IN - 3 3 3 4 3 4 3 4 3 - 30 (five under)
He did not chip in at any hole and had 25 putts in claiming 10 birdies in a bogey-free round. Another highlight was seven consecutive 3s from the second to the eighth inclusive.
"It was a perfect, sunny day for golf, with no wind at all" said Kris later. "I was fairly relaxed about it all until I stood on the 17th tee and knew I had to finish par-birdie or birdie-par to get a 59.
"I had to settle for a par 4 at the 17th which really put me under pressure to birdie the last. It boiled down to a 6ft putt on the 18th green, which I managed to hole to complete my memorable round.
"I think my wedge play had a lot to do with it. I was wedging it pretty close to the hole all the way round."
Nicol won a £150 prize for heading a field of 97 players.
Runner-up with a 62 was Tartan Tour supremo Greig Hutcheon who also covered the outward half in five-under-par 29 but hooked a ball out of bounds to bogey the 13th and could not repair the damage well enough to threaten Nicol.
"No disgrace to be beaten by a 59 - that was some round by Kris!" said Hutcheon.

Must keep with practice of my wedge play…my scoring stabilised then starting improving quite markedly when I got new clubs that included four wedges. I sorted the ballpark yardages for the wedges on the practice ground; and at the same time started using a laser r/f for getting my yardages on the course. Not going to do a nett 59 off scratch for a bit though.

There used to be a prize of a Sunday Post Putter, given by the newspaper to anyone who played a competitive round and kept a 6 off their card. They imaginatively called it "Keep a 6 Off Your card" and it is something that I have constantly thought of over the years, striving fruitlessly to produce competition cards with nothing higher than a 5 on them.

His card doesn't even have a 5 on it and his plethora of 3's is totally beyond my imagination.

I've never heard of the Sunday Post but I seem to remember seeing something similar in the Sunday Express as a kid.

I think your memory is slightly out. Sunday Post putter used to be awarded for a hole in one. (Bit ironic giving a putter as a prize to a feat that didn't actually require a putter)

This is where my memory may be wrong or hazy but I think it was the Express that gave you a sleeve of Dunlop 65i for keeping a 6 off your card??

Shocked!!
The Sunday Post is a 100 year old institution, produced in Scotland but on sale south of the border. It is/was a quaint Scottish national paper with local good feel stories and is famous (in my eyes) for its cartoon section which features "Oor Wullie" and "The Broons".

Played with my mate Walter today who was a member at Aboyne back then. He didn't play in this particular one but said the standard was very good with a lot of decent players taking part as it was on a Thursday unlike the alliance around here and the one further north. Paul Lawrie was a regular in this and was always up for the 2s sweep?

…not forgetting Nero and Zero…

The Fun Section was always my Sunday morning read at breakfast. And when I did a paper round I think that just about everyone got the Sunday Post. Some households would have ‘the Post and (Sunday) Mail’, and a few would have the Sunday Times…but usually with the Sunday Post. An institution.

I do agree that the Sunday Post putter was for a hole in 1; the Express did the ‘keep a six off your card’. I think I know that because I only became aware of ‘keep a six off’ when I moved to England and joined a club.
