Because at clubs seniors get discounted membership which some do not want to offer att 55 when they hope to get another 10 years full subs out of them. Financial more than anything else I think. Having said that it is 55 at the course I use

I've not seen a seniors membership rate at my club so I can only assume, we don't have one! Not sure why seniors have to have a reduced rate, I see our seniors at the club when I pop in almost daily so their certainly getting good use of the course, possibly far more than 7-day members paying top whack who uses the course only at weekends!

Not sure that would be the main reason so interested to know if others are set at an age to marry up the senior membership?

No discounts at our, in fact it's the other way 26 -30 and pay a lot less.

Don't Know Robin , as fast approaching 55 I'm hoping to play in a lot of Seniors comps but ironically the Seniors fiddle at our starts at 60 !!

I agree. 20% less seniors pay at the place I use as do under 25's I think, juniors is only £75!! The seniors moaned that they could not afford full subs as most were retired and say the could not carry on with just the state pension but this does not appear to stop them drinking and smoking like chimneys but that is another matter. Lots of them not all have private pensions as well that they seem to conveniently forget when suited. Anyway the senior section was that large they give them a discount as fear of losing some was to great. Anyway the club has clawed the money back as the casual green fees have gone up and so has the bar prices!!

Ditto, I'm 55 this year and can enter loads of senior opens across the country, but I can't compete at my own club!

I understood that it was often determined by the County Union e.g. Leics 60, Derbyshire 55.

As for discounted subs at our Club they are available from 65 onwards but only to members with at least 25 years continuous membership. The theory being that over that period they have paid their 'wack'. Not certain I agree but then by the time my membership is next due for renewal I will be 65 and a member for 33 years.

Why is there such a variation in ages to compete in senior competitions?

The Senior Tour is bench marked at only 50, which Ronan Rafferty has just reached so is now entering to take on Royal Porthcawl, but across the country clubs vary from 55-65!

Why can't there be a standard age set for senior participation?

Most clubs in my area seem to set 55 as the minimum age for seniors, but some are 60 or even 65. We do have members at our club in their 50's who are comfortably off and retired, but the vast majority of our seniors comps are held during the week, which is not good for those who are still working, unless they can fit their work around that. Other than 5-day membership, no discount for seniors at our club.

If we've got a discount for seniors it's very minimal and you have to be over 65 to qualify.

I'm now 55 and work, but I get a day off (prety much any day of my choice) during the week and much of my golf this year is going to be in Seniors Opens (haven't played in one before) - can't beat playing a Top 100 in the World course for a £15 entry fee

I know, I've been looking earlier and can't believe some of the low entry fee's to enter some of the senior comps at top tracks. I wasn't looking forward to being classed as or putting myself forward as a senior, but hell, its bloomin' brilliant value :whoo:

Going OT somewhat I think we need to start a seniors forum section the specifically excludes all those slow playing, penny pinching, whinging 'juniors' below 50 who think that the world owes them a living + a shot on every hole.:cheers::clap::thup:(just in case the young element have not got a GSOH )

Good idea that one for the under 50's whippersnappers who can discuss golfs future and one for the senior members who can discuss the good old days, tradition and good old fashioned clubhouse stuffiness :ears:

Would golf have a future if left to the whippersnappers? Apparently, due to mortgages and families, they can't afford it.

But then in no time at all they will be old farts themselves and moaning about the younger generation and declining standards.

As Jean van der Velde might say "Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose."
