Had an offer accepted on a new house and the first thing I want to do if everything goes smoothly is take down the existing conservatory which is very small and a very unusual shape.

Need to keep the costs down so I have been looking at self build options and homebase have seemingly very good deals at the moment.

http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wc...at_14344776|Victorian+Conservatories|14344779

as an example.

Know a few brickies at the club who could do the dwarf wall and foundations etc... but how difficult are they to construct for an amatuer? Anybody got any experience of trying to put one together?

Don't bother.

Conservatories are hot in summer and freezing in winter.

The hardest part of the installation is putting the roof on.and sealing it properly.

Good luck though.

I'm a roofer by trade and personally would rather get a skilled conservatory fitter in to do the job after all he will know how to seal it correctly. Have you ever tried step flashing lead work before

Not done it personally but seen it done a few times and I appreciate it can be tricky to get it right. Was thinking more along the lines of getting the basic structure done myself and calling in a couple of the roofers at the club to help with sealing and flashing etc..

There again from reading around it might just be worth seeing if I can get hold of someone to fit it.

Thought it was worth asking as the prices from homebase seem very cheap.

Most independent upvc manufacturers will sell direct to you if you're looking at saving money, just make sure the fitters do the measurements.

I'd say you were looking at a couple of grand for the foundations/wall and you could probably find a fitter on a local community forum/local paper for another 1K. Some of those small conservatories are more like a goldfish bowl though....

Noticed on the website....
Includes: All fixings and sealant, rainwater goods, cresting and finial, installation DVD and comprehensive installation instructions.

As a roofer I would say get a professional in, I would rather get someone in to do the bits I lack knowledge in, such as the brickwork and footings. It only takes one error and it could make all the difference.

Check out diynot.com if your adamant you want to give it ago, lots of helpful advice on there.
