Just a quick question or two for the hardcore bikers

I currently have no car and getting the bus and relying on lifts to and from work can be a right pain in the ass. My wife already has a car and I want to get another form of transport. I was originally thinking of buying a cheap car but noticed a few scooters on the road and thought they seem a good idea.

I really just want it to get to and from work and maybe down to the golf the odd time!! I will have access to the family car when required at weekend / holidays etc.

I was thinking a small 50-100 cc one. Anyone here have one. Are they cheap to run/insure and how much would I expect to pay for a second one? I think one would be ideal for a year or two without splashing out for a car.

Cheers

i used to own a gilera runner sp and would love to get another cost about a fiver to fill up and would last about 200 miles insurance wouldnt be that much worth looking into but id try an go for a minimum 125cc not a 50cc as they are really slow

As stated will get about 200 mile per tank. Forget anything less than 125cc, much to slow. Can use your car licence as a provisional. If I remember right if you are over 25yrs old you can get an unrestricted bike which will give you more speed. Restricted bikes only do around 40mph and a lot slower up hill can be down to 20mph up hill. no good as car drivers try to push passed.

A guy I work with had one, and he got knocked off it twice in six months. Not good. Once was by a bus, which stopped behind him at lights, then drove straight into the back of him when the lights changed. Nothing he could do about it.

I like a lot of metal around me when I am on the road.

I drove a scooter once about 20 years ago and it put me off motorised two-wheeled transport for life. It was a miracle that I didn't fall or be knocked off. Far worse than that was the inability to smoke or listen to music whilst travelling.

At least if you use public transport you can read a paper while travelling and then decide to top yourself 'cos it says the whole country is screwed instead of disappearing under the front axle of an ASDA juggernaut.

i just had a quick look into this as its something i never thought aboput but would be handy,

if you held a full driving licence before feb 2001, your good to go and get one and not undergo a CBT

That only applies to a 50cc if my memory serves me right. I decided to do what your suggesting a few years ago and did my cbt and got a yamaha 125cc. Really cheap to run but bloody awful in the winter both interms of the cold and also the standard of the road surface. Many a time i was scared stiff on the ride home. Great in summer but not for winter if you ask me.

I had a Peugeot 50cc scooter which cost £15 a year in road tax and around £80 a year to insure, a tank full of fuel would cost £5 and last about 2 weeks.

I only used it for commuting, which was cheap due to work being only 4 mile away. Not fast but it did the job I bought it for.

Only advice I would give is always wear a hi-viz jacket and always ride with your lights on, no excuse for car users not to see you then.
