I'm heading over to America in 3 weeks time and I'm wondering about sat nav systems, iv never owned one before. I will be doing quite a bit of driving to various places and covering quite a few miles, Iv been quoted £90 from Alamo for 10 days hire of one, is this a reasonable price?? Or would I be cheaper/better of just buying one here and taking it with me, obviously one that can take us roads maps! If so any suggestions on what make/model to get.

Do you have a smart phone?
I've got something called Premium Navigation on my HTC, where you can download the maps for free when at home(use a direct or wireless connection cos it's a lot of data) then you pay a one off fee to use the navigation. About £45 for USA. As the maps are stored on
your phone your are not subject to roaming g charges.

I have an iPhone 5, but never really looked into this angle as I suspected the data/roaming charges would be rediculous. Will investigate! Cheers

I downloaded USA and Canada for my Navman for a one off fee. I just remove the UK sim and put in the USA sim. Used it several times. It's good for finding golf courses.
