Back in July, three of us tied with scores of 77 for our club's Seniors' Championship. The round I had that day could not have been a stroke better. I hit a lot of greens but usually a long way from the hole. I holed a lot of 4 & 5 foot second putts for pars. Every time I missed a green I dropped a shot. I had four bogeys & one double, without even a birdie chance.

Yesterday, in the playoff, I played my best golf of the season and was two ahead of my 5 handicap mate until he birdied the 3rd & I 3 putted. Four behind after 9 I got it back to 1 after 14, only to slip up on 15 & 16, where he went birdie, par to my bogey bogey. Another putt slid by for a birdie on 17 & an unlucky bogey on 18 left my opponent the winner by four. Our scores both the same number below handicap, were 73 for him &, again, 77 for me.

I played so much better in this round for the same score in what were easier conditions. Quite a few birdie chances missed and two on the card. It's a funny old game but I was very happy with the way I played. The better man won. Two completely different roundsrounds, but the scorecards tell no stories!

Me and my mate had this last night in the medal- Both shot 76, both playing off a 9 handicap. He was at every tree on the course and managed to scramble well. I hit a lot of greens and kept missing the birdie putts (had 2 birdies, at least 4 more opportunities within 6 feet).

It's funny how you can play so differently and still card the same score.

Sometimes you just have to grind out a half decent score. It might not be pretty, but sometimes it'll give you the same score as a round that you think was near perfect. Last Sunday I got a cheeky little cut, dropping 5 shots to gross and not a single birdie in sight. Proper topped 4 tee shots and had a 3 putt. It was the ugly side of ugly, but the score did the business.
