RUM

I’ve never, ever tried rum.
Do you drink it neat or mix it with something like coke

If you do, is there any point in spending more money?

Thanks.
Any way you like it.
I prefer it neat, with or without ice depending on my mood.
I drink my whisky the same way; if you're a whisky drinker maybe try it the way you drink your whisky.
A good rum is as good as a good whisky but a cheap rum, like Lamb's Navy, is still really good whereas cheap whisky is purely a vehicle for carrying alcohol.

And as much as I love rum I really dislike spiced rum, so don't be put off if you try that first and find it unpleasant.

@Lucifer MorningStar Duppy Share rums are good too. Small British company importing and blending Caribbean rums.
DS Aged and DS White are really nice sipping rums.
Exactly how I drink most of mine just over ice especially the better ones. Some of the flavoured ones or the spices I’d add the odd dash of coke or lemonade depending on the flavour of the rum and ifs a social outing.

Funny enough it’s coming across the Duppy Share rums that prompted my post to enquire about ideas on here. I’ve ordered a share Aged one to try this weekend was also interest in the XO one.

Been some good suggestions on here so far so I’ve got plenty to ponder for ordering next week ahead of the big birthday 🎁

@Lucifer MorningStar Not as many as years gone by but we’ve still got about a dozen local distilleries in these parts (easy access to sugar) and rum is one of the few things exported. In UK you’ll find lots of rums from distilleries like Bougainville, Chamarel, Labourdonnais, New Grove, Blue Mauritius, Dodo rum & at the less expensive end, Green Island

I've tried more than a couple and can't say any were bad

Santa teresa 1796. I just bought a bottle of that on the ship. It’s was £26 and pence for a litre. I can let you know at some Point what it is like, but price wise it is an absolute steal.
The woman in the shop said it was the last one. Last night I saw another last one but I couldn’t buy it as I had bought 4 x dmf of different bottles. ( 70cl ) At £9 and pence each. A 1 ltr bottle of monkey shoulder (£19.23) for my lad and a bottle of Shankys whip(£19.23). Google it, it was gorgeous.
So bottom line. I would have been over weight if I bought another bottle. As it happened I was. 😂
The four bottles of dmf I keep as prizes for a golf comp I do every year. 👍
This last hols with marella. It served captain morgans spiced rum. It is ok. Not one of the best. But it got hammered. One of the joys of all inc drinks passage on the ship.

An old Post I did on the whisky thread.

As part of Tashyboys endeavours to enlighten himself to different cultures. He has ended up this last week in Normandie with Missis Tash, SIL And BIL. We have done the cemeteries and other military museums. The Tapestry in Bayeaux and had some glorious food. Today was a long drive for Tash up to Honfluer and Deauville and bottom line they are simply stunning places.
However Last Tuesday was a trip to Cherbourg, and putting it bluntly it’s a dump. So my plan B was a drive do Barfluer. A gorgeous little place. On the way back To Longues sur Mer ( our Gite base). I did a little coastal detour. It took us to a town called Saint- vaast- La -Houngue. It was there that I found the drinkers Zanadu purely by accident. I was gobsmacked to find a lovely bottle of Ron Zacapa Negra for €69 which included 2 x Tulip glasses. It’s a steal and I needed a bigger head I was smiling that much. It has just about everything one needs inc whisky, rum, gins, wine etc.

If ever your in the area. 😁👍

The coffee flavour sounds interesting, I have tried Kraken and Coke topped up with Guinness, very nice it is too, so will give your suggestion a try, although on first investigation the Dead Mans Fingers flavours seem to be hard to track down.

I prefer spiced rum and some of my favourite regular not too expensive brands are Sailor Jerry, Krakken and Rumbullion but my atop choice is Captain Morgan Black with Coke.

Kraken do a dark roast coffee as well. I prefer it as it is less sweet than dead man's fingers (and that has changed since it moved on from being sold in hand printed bottles in the rum and crab shack to the shelf filler it is now)

Our 27th anniversary today and MrsA has just come back from Tesco and handed me a bottle of Havana Club 7; also delicious.
Obvious guilt for only one of us bothering to have got a card for the other.

Glad to see planteray made the list - it really is special. Stood out a mile after trying many different and rare rums. I'm sure you'll love it👍

Saw the suggestion and went down the rabbit hole looking at all the options on their website and could have ordered so many more. I’m really looking forward to giving it a try with just a bit of ice.

Thank the lord I found an old post coz there was no way I was typing that again.

So here goes, aterix at the side of the good ones.

I am a big Flor de Cana fan. Never had a bad one from them. Missis T booked a cruise last year in which we were to go to Nicaragua. I was going to go to the factory for a special bottle. Princess cruises cancelled Nicaragua two weeks before. I was bloody livid as they never had any intentions of going there. I don’t mind the spiced rums, but the Don papa masskara for me don’t seem as massed produced as the dead man’s fingers and Krackens.
There’s a few worth a few quid which I may never touch. Another I have had and is not on the list is Ron Zacapa. It is gorgeous. First tried that in Alma de Cuba in Liverpool. The Ron Zacapa Negra edition I picked up in France. A shop called Maisonette Gosselin,Saint Vaast La Hooge. It was an absolute gem of a shop, a real drinkers paradise whatever your tipple. It was a steal.

When I was in Mauritius, Slab got me a round of golf on the Mont Choisy course. Anyway whilst in Mauritius I had a car and that car was definitely going to the Chamarel rum factory. It was brilliant. However it was the closest I was to divorcing Missis T. I was driving and there was loads of “ samples”, she kept saying you should try this, ooooh you should try this. I was bloody livid however the Chamarel vanilla is a thing of beauty.
I don’t for one minute confess to being a rum expert, but it seems for a quality rum, you have to pay a bit. Most of my rums have been tax free. And the savings have been huge.
My faves are.
Don Pappa Masskara, a lovely spiced rum
Any Flor de Cana.
Ron Zacapa. I bought 3 bottles at £38 each from Tesco. They were selling them off coz the druggies were pinching them.
Admiral Rodney is gorgeous.

One thing I have read. Get a tulip glass, the shape of the glass ensures the aromas are directed to your nose. They are excellent.
Best experience drinking Rum. When I was introduced to Flor de Cana in Costa Rica. Me and Missis T had a Rum experience. It cost $20. It was worth $200. The guy did loads of rums and finished off by doing a Flor de Cana 18 yr old cocktail. The glass was placed on an old school cheese board with the glass dome. Alongside was the dried herb rosemary was 🔥 lit. The smoke infused into the cocktail and quite frankly it was rum porn. The cocktail was not part of the all inclusive but it was for Tash when I kept slipping the bartender $5 most nights.
One of the fuddle lads has just moved to Thailand yesterday. 9 months there and 3 in Oz. His leaving do was Tuesday, I was in Croatia. I left the lads a bottle of 12 yr old Flor de Cana to have a tipple on the first tee.

PS, the asterixs at the side of the good ones. I have not opened all the bottles I have tried. 👍
That’s just the bottles I have.
