Explain how that can be done once the course is full up with competitors!

Only the early guys can a reasonable amount of time before/without a special trip, so 'not fair'!

The assumption there is that the course will be full of Competitors....

And what amounts to a "reasonable amount of time"?
Even a quick putt on the 18th is going to give you a helping hand....

Not trying to be argumentative - it's just one of those rules I've always thought to be daft.
Why not just prevent ALL practice on the day of a competitive round...?

I was in the clubhouse when a couple wandered in the other day and said they had told a late player in a 4bbb to clear off as he was 6 holes late arriving and they "invoked the rules" in a knockout comp.

Their attitude changed when I put them right! (One a 7 handicapper)

Not one of them carried a rule book!

Why not just prevent ALL practice on the day of a competitive round...?

That would very often prevent anyone playing a second match (whether in same or different competitions!) on the same day!

I think the point is that someone teeing of at 7:30 wouldn't have the same opportunity to play the course as someone off at say 2pm in a stroke play event, whilst is matchplay you and your opponent will always have the exact same amount of time as you are teeing off together.

Makes you wonder if they calculated the shots correctly when there were just 3 of them playing...

If there is still time to play the match I'd suggest that the Secretary says the match should be played as it was conceded under a misconception imposed by the other pairing and apparentluy backed up by a committee member.
