Used to love a Thursday when the weekly papers used to arrive. Always had a copy of Roy of the Rovers for me. Gutted when it finished.:(

My favourite was always the goalkeeper Rick Stewart. Spent hours colouring in the black and white strips and pictures during school...A good save was always known as a Rick Stewart in our endless hours playing football as kids.

When I used to buy a paper for sports it was always the sun but the first page I went to was always the Striker comic strip. Haven't bought a daily paper for years so I have some catching up to do. :D

PS I bet there was a few secret Bunty readers here. I remember the day I caught my friend readings his sisters Bunty. :rofl:
 
I always remember Charlie "The Cat" Carter being in goal. Blackie Gray, Vernon Eliot, Duncan McKay, Jumbo Trudgeon, Gerry Holloway. It's sad I can remember then all.

If you change the N to an S in Bunty, you get a magazine that most of the people on this forum probably read ;)
 
Ah, fond memories of my childhood. My nan and granddad used to buy it for me each week.

I used to enjoy Billy's Boots, Rapper and Mighty Mouse and Hamish. Great stuff!
 
Always used to but the commando comic/booklet. Warlord was another fave.

Dont know why but a couple of years ago I started buying the Dandy annuals and now have 48 of the 76 made. Some of them are going for decent figures.

Striker in the sun, poor old Nick has has his share of probs. muddy Mildred.

An avid reader as a kid, when we visited my relatives in the western isles the only reading to be had were my cousin's (girl) Bunty and Judy comics. I rather liked The Four Marys as it happens :)

Wasn't Billy's Boots in the The Hotspur (or maybe it was The Victor or The Valiant - anyway - I say that as I never read The Eaglethat much and did read Billy's Boots

My mate (now retired) was a sports reporter with the local paper and we used to share a car when he was covering Dundee's away games - on a trip to Dumfries we were talking about what we'd done in our careers before first meeting and he mentioned that he'd been editor of The Bunty at one point
 
Had Roy on order in the newsagents along with a couple others , so many moons ago now ..

Billy's Boots . Hotshot Hamish .. Safest hands in soccer (possibly wrong mag) & of course the mighty Roy himself played for Melchester Rovers (i think) played in Red & Yellow if i remember correctly

Memories beautiful memories , simple days ..
 
If I remember correctly, in the '70's Billy's Boots was in Scorcher, later to become Scorcher and Score when two comics merged. Happy days!
 
Tiger and Scorcher. Roy of the Rovers was a spin-off in the late 1970s and had stories like "Mike's Mini-Men" about a subbuteo team. Tiger also had Nipper Lawrence and Skid Solo.

The Hotspur had a football team of aliens called Rottenham Hotspur. I mean, how pissed must the guy who came up with that one have been?

Was going to mention Mike's mini men. He was lucky that the orphanage let him swap his Melchester Subbuteo team for other presents after his mother gave them away, otherwise he would never have won the big tournament! :thup:


Another that enjoyed the Victor, Commando, Warlord etc as well as the Beano and Dandy. The best was the Broons and Oor Wullie in the Sunday Post though. :)

Broons and Oor Wullie were indeed the best - and the current artist is pretty good - and almost up to Dudley D Watkins standard - though I find the story lines a bit too 'modern' I also liked Nero and Zero in the SP.
 
I was a huge subbuteo fan as a kid. Still actually have a set in the loft. There is still quite a big following.....a few forums which are active and some tournaments organised. Played in one a few years ago and several Italians flew over to play (it's really popular in Italy). There was a bit of a relaunch a couple years ago but if any of you have any original 70's teams ("heavyweights") stashed away have a look on e bay. They go for anything from £15-20 to several hundred for rarities.
 
I used to get The Hotspur Christmas annual every year. Some great stories in there and some brilliant characters. I'd occasionally get Roy of the Rovers but it didn't quite do it for me.

Some of the zombie teams go for a fair few quid as well.

I used to have the stadium, floodlights, camera tower and crew, subs bench, officials, policemen (handy for my Rangers Celtic clashes :) ), scoreboard........damn, I had loads of it. Wish I'd bleeding well kept it now!
 
Dandy, Beano, Beezer, whizzer and chips, roy of the rovers, tiger and the victor. I was getting 7 every week or fortnight at one point, when my mam said thats too many now.

As I got older I started getting the shiny commando books, which were often based on true stories.

I then moved up to glossier magazines, but I didn't believe the stories in them as much.:p
 
Got the Victor for a few years, and was allowed two editions of Commando when we went on holiday to sunny Scarborough.

Alf Tupper was my hero. Fish and chip supper, sleep under a hedge and then win a marathon. And if you told the kids of today they wouldn't believe you.
 
Some great stories from ROTR's that I'd forgotten about. Heading home next weekend...might try and take a look up in the attic.

As for subbuteo..that deserves a whole new thread. Along with my brother and cousin we used to play for hours creating leagues from all over Europe.
I bought an old set off ebay about 9 years ago and used to play against mates until the spare room became a nursery and the pitch got destroyed. Should still have the teams somewhere???
