We have had a severe weather warning issued with waves that could hit 40ft.
Bare on mind the storm that hit us down here on Tuesday night into Wednesday had a maximum wave height 38 feet but a bouy off Lands End topped out at 74.8 feet!
I'm not sure how much more the costal towns and villages around Cornwall and Devon can cope with much more of this without some restbite to repair and rebuild.

This is the map of the next battering from the seas around Cornwall. Lets hope they are wrong this time!

Just a ridiculous amount of bad storms you lot have had to deal with this winter. Hopefully they have got it wrong and it's not as bad as what's predicted.

It's easy for Tashyboy to say that I live on top of a hill. So am not gonna get flooded so am not bothered. But quiet frankly am flipping livid at the way in which the whole sorry affair has been handed. To say we have not cleared silt from the river coz it creates problems elsewhere is disgraceful. The response both financially and Responsively has been pathetic. How much extra has the government promised £60 million and yet we still give handouts to India and China to the tune of hundreds of millions. Have I missed something here.

i look forward to seeing the next general election results in the Somerset area.

gutted for all affected.

It is the same whichever Government is in power pal they all refuse to spend the serious money needed by give tens of millions away in aid to countries which do not use it properly and end up buying weapons and such like with it. The whole system stinks. I have to be honest I am not convinced it will affect the vote as that is still some way off. I feel their pain I really do up here in the NW has not been that bad considering what is happening elsewhere.

Won't get any argument from me re which government is in power. During the miners strike in 1984' me dad says that there's no difference between governments oh how I laughed. A generation later I now know what he means. I can only blame this lot that's in coz there the ones saying clearing the rivers of silt creates a problem elsewhere.

re election being a long way off, that again I realise but at this rate the problem is going to be there for months and people have long memories.

bottom line for them/me is action speaks louder than words and at the moment there don't seem to be a lot of action. And what bit there has been has been late.

Depends when the rain/storms finally stop. You will be amazed how quick it clears with a bit of dry weather I know that seems a long way off at the moment but it will happen sooner or later. The silt excuse is the biggest load of bull I have heard in ages so with you on that one. The rivers need to be dredged and until this happens the same problems will keep happening. Yes the action has been late and has been minimal. I tell you now if London had got this problem it would have been sorted with a couple of days but because it is the lesser counties that are really struggling they do not seem that bothered.

Good to see so few of you actually read an OP before jumping in with an anti-governmental gripe or complaint.
I was commenting on the sea state not the amount of rain we are having. If the Somerset levels (which are flood plains when all is said and done) get flooded by the seas we are having down here then we will be looking at a national crisis rather than a regional one. Rivers aren't flooding down here as much as the sea is encroaching inland while huge waves are devestation harbour walls, promenades and sea defences around the coast.
The enviroment agency has far more to do with the damage in Somerset than central government who are advised by the environment agency as to what action to take. You don't blame the CEO when a departmental manager can't do their job properly.

Andy you open your topic with a severe weather warning which includes rain and wind (see my posts re tornado at Sherwood Forest 1 mile from my house) which thankfully by the grace of god did not affect me.

yes I do have a gripe with this government and why not, cos the same government that has responded poorly to what has happened in Somerset, has responded just as poorly in maintaining what is Victorian sea defences, as has previous labour governments. The bottom line is why should we put up with it.

You have also stated that you are not sure how much more the coastal towns and villages can take and that is part of my point, parts of Somerset have past that point of not being able to cope over six weeks ago.

Again because it is at the other end of the country does not mean that it is out of sight and out of mind, a good friend who retired from mining after 40 years has moved down to his home in sennan cove. The sight of the highest waves this week everyone up north who knows him hope him and his family are ok.

I know it probably doesn't help those areas that are flooded, but the government should stop selling flood plains off to build cheap housing on. IT's a flood plain for a reason, tarmacking and concreting it over only leads to those houses being wrecked and the flooding affecting other people.

This is Porthleven being battered in January.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lozU3TkpDWQ

We have been battered by bigger and bigger waves over the last month causing tens of millions of pounds of damage to historic and essential habour defences to the point some harbours have little left to protect themselves from the coming storms.
Watch the monkey hut at the end of the pier then at about 5:20 you can see it's gone. It's survived countless storms but this one was just too much for it. Sea walls are now crumbling into the sea leaving villages, some of which are documented in the doomsday book, open to the full force of the sea.

Those waves are incredible. It's strange that first thing I did this morning was look outside and see if the comp will be on. Yet 200 miles away the world is turned upside down.

Sob sob sob. Will you here us oop norf moaning when we've still got rain pouring down and it's still cold in May, whilst everyone down south bathe in glorious sunshine? Will you be up in arms and suggest that the government build us a rain barrier? No, thought not.

Yeah, don't worry.
It's only flooding and storms..
It's not like anyone's lost their homes or jobs or anything is it........
It's not like anyone's been hurt or anything...
It's not like anyone's been flooded out since Christmas
It's just a drop of rain.......

But if you don't want any sympathy when things get tough up there then that's fine with me....

This is another factor that is affecting the levels, hundreds of houses have been built in the Wells, Street and surrounding areas, now I all that run off is making it down to the levels. It's about to happen in N & S Devon but the planners take no notice of the warnings given by the locals.

With four dead so far from the storms down here so it's a little more than a drop of rain or even a lot of rain. Too many people are taking silly risks to watch the sea when it's this violent and some have paid the ultimate price. My biggest concern at the moment is this storm is hitting us over the weekend with more people not at work and able to travel to watch the seas.
Cameron has been in Somerset today and ordered the environment agency to start extensive dredging in the area but it's not the answer in the long term.
It's been a long winter so far and it doesn't look like there's an end to it for quiet some time to come.
