Been a bit of a difficult year re getting out to play golf. Played loads over the winter months and by and large the weather was fantastic when the rest of the country suffered. I was confident going into this season I could kick on from me handicap of 24 (been down to 22).
played week last Saturday when defending me captains day trophy and shot 28 points with four blobs. Overall it wasn't a good round.
today was an 18 hole medal and I started slow, but it got better and better. Some of me putts were very good and some finished 1/2" behind the hole but I was smoking. Coming to the last tee I knew I was flowing. Then flippin bang, a soddin 9 on a straightforward par 5. I finished with a net 72 and was leading the comp when I left but a aargh arghhhh flippin argghhhh. What's that all about I was buzzin and one flippin hole has ruined my long term goal to get under 20.

my playing partner said I played very very well and don't let one hole beat you up especially as yer winning at the mo but ave steam coming out of me ears and I finished 3 hr ago.

why do I/we put ourselves through it?

Hard to bear.

But there's the answer right there, you'd got a ways ahead of yourself, already in a sense mentally given yourself a par or a bird even if you hadn't actually consciously thought it. So you'd lost sight of staying in the present, lost concentration. Seen as a cliche, but really is true & very important to finishing a good score off. One shot at a time.

You have to find a way of staying emotionally as level as you're able to, just has to be one shot at a time, till the last one disappears. Stay in the present really is the only way to get it done, & bring the score home.

So next time :)

Perhaps it's your use of the word "me"

I will remind you why you are playing the game:
1. You had a Captains Day title to defend
2. You have just hit a nett 72 with a 9 on your card
Last year I had a great year and that meant I had 2 titles to defend his week. Defending my first one, I shot 11 shots worse than last year and when defending the second title I shot 20 worse than last year!!! Both rounds featuring my worst back 9 in 25 years.
Right now, I would kill for a 72! There is always someone worse off than yourself :)
Your partner was right. It was one bad hole in an otherwise good round that could have been great if the putts had dropped. If you had been playing stableford, you would have had a great score. Medal is a much tougher format.
The truth is that is golf. It can be disappointing when you mess up on one hole, particularly the last, but the fact is you haven't scored anything, especially in a medal, until you have sunk the last putt. Until then, all you are doing is building a score.
It sounds to me you just got a little ahead of yourself

I would love to shoot a score under 100 I have yet to break 120. But every time I go out to play I remember that I play golf for fun and relaxation from the pressure of life.

If you are going to be the 'English Police', at least get your own punctuation right in the comment!

There's plenty of other 'Red Mark' stuff in there too! But we all understand the message and, according to my step-kids, that's what language is all about!

I cringe where 'went' is used where 'gone' should be! Seems to be a trait of Northern/Scottish folk!

Spelling Nazi is the term your after. And I dont really care, just a observation.

No. A 'Spelling (or Grammar) Nazi' would have pointed out all of the errors - like the missing 'g's and 'I's!

Back On Topic. That last hole is exactly why we play - and keep coming back! I often say there's a touch of masochism required to play Golf! And it's the determination to 'beat' the hole - and ourselves - that keeps us going. It's a whole lot safer and more accessible than many other individual endeavours too!

There's 155 no doubt going through similar emotional highs and lows at The US Open too - and it's their livelihood! We just do it for 'relaxation'! :confused;

For the record I finished 4th overall and 1st in my division and dropped from 24.1 to 23.3. So ave a bit of prize money to come which will go towards a nice pair of puma shorts. Having analized the last hole it was trying to play a 5 iron out of wispy grass from 165yd that screwed up me. I should of took me punishment and played a nice 9ish iron out and pitched onto the dance floor.

my playing partner who plays off 21 said I aim to get on the green in three and two putt (par four). I tried it and it seemed to work quite well.

I think my reasons for the post was I was on for me best round Ever and it blew up in the last 10 mins. Frustration was an understatement hence my last sentence why do I/we do it. Coz am sure I'm not the only one who's been there.

roll on Thursday. One final note. Picked up me titleist 913fd after yesterday's round and cannot wait to leather it.
