Remember 2000?

I do remember it well yes. Pity they didnt keep the protest going if you ask me. Anyway is there some more protests looming or something? Need to know as I finish for easter on wednesday and need to get home:)

Heard the news that they are balloting and part of me says fair play and the other part says balls as it will create mayhem again. Still something needs to be done as we're being robbed blind by the amount the exchequer takes in tax

Agreed something does need to be done. However peaceful protests do not work over here as the Government just say they are listening and then do nowt lip service basically. Unfortunately the only way to get things changed is through widespread civil unrest ie Poll Tax or like this Fuel blockades. Sad state of affairs but unfortunately realistic. So fair play to em I say might be a bit of pain and hardship but if it's for the greater good then go for it.

The ConDems wer quick to praise the Arab Spring when people protested about greed and exploitation. Let's see what they say when the UK population make their point regarding fuel prices. I fuelled up my Passat last week and it clicked on £102.00.

They all say they are for free speech and democracy but when the time comes boy do they not like it. When that cretin Blair and his cronies were in power for the las Fuel protest you could see he was fuming and then having the call to call it anarchy.

Agreed, its the only way. Last time I was in an exempt job. So special service at the pumps. This time I'm not. So I will walk if I have to. So what it will most likely do me good. Back them all the way.

Good on you mate. All I ask is that they do not do it over the Easter hols as I have got loads of Golf trips booked and planned while I have finished college for a fortnight:D seriously though if there is going to be a blockade or protest the they should start after the Easter hols have finished so as not to disrupt peoples holidays and spending time when the kids are off this way public support will likely be much higher.

Thing is it was the refineries that were blocked by Trucks and Farmers last time was it not? Protesting about fuel prices.
The delivery drivers never went on strike if memory serves me right.
It's 100% the governments tax regime that's caused this,I work for an oil company and can tell you we get more for a barrel of oil for refining into products rather than fuel, the mark up and profit on a litre of fuel is a few pence, the government takes around 70% of it in tax.

Your right the delivery drivers didn't go on strike however when the protests started they joined and helped them out by refusing to make deliveries if I remember correctly. If it starts and takes off it is like a domino effect everybody starts to join in.

I have seen lots of panic buying of fuel recently, I think this country just needs to move away from "gas guzzlers"

I did 60mpg in my 7 year old car to Cambridge and back last weekend. If everyone had cars that did that...

Personally I do not care how my car looks, just how cheap it is to run. To do this though taxing fuel doesnt work well, the varied car tax rate does but has less of an affect than anticipated.

What REALLY needs to happen is we need as a nation to get over the obsession with cars and their performance and focus on promoting fuel economy and alternative power sources.

I chose to drive a "guzzler", I choose to pay more insurance than I ideally have to, I do not smoke, I drink rarely. The government take money from me income tax, national insurance, VAT, Road Duty, tv licensing, rates and a few other stealthy ways.

Now, are you going to tell me that the cost of producing fuel, the administration and logistics has doubled in ten years? I dont think it has even gotten close.
We are fighting wars, bailing out banks, donating to countries richer than ourselves to help them become more technologically able so that they may be able to trade with us, for us only to go and outsource everything to them instead giving them a wage and also a handout too (generally speaking). We allow millions of immigrants into the country who then slap us in the face by claiming benefits, housing and then sending half the money back home to their originating country.
Some of our own population are bone idle too so we give then handouts and houses. Who bears the brunt of all of this? those decent working people who get the least back form the country but put the most in.

So yea, lets just keep squeezing the heart that keeps everything else alive until it eventually gives. Then the papers can sell more papers with photos of these bad people causing trouble.

The strike has nothing to do with the price of fuel. It's about very well paid (~£45k) drivers being cajolled by bully boy union leaders (on over £100k) into striking over "working conditions" although this is really just a smokescreen for getting better pay.

They should all just be sacked and new folk re-trained who actually appreciate a good salary. Reagan did this with the air traffic controllers, sacked the lot of them, and they haven't striked again in 40 years

I could not agree more (and I don't even drive a "gas guzzler", really. I drive a 2.0L Mondeo diesel. Still costs me over £100 to fill up now, despite the fact I can *just about* get 45 miles to the gallon if I drive at exactly 70mph and only use it on Motorways)

Got to admit you are spot on with that Brendy!

I just have it in for the top end cars that do 6-15mpg! I couldn't agree more that people with relatively efficient cars who look after them should be rewarded for their choice. Taxing fuel is pretty inefficient at doing that as people with those cars can do lots of mileage and be hurt a lot! What is needed is to sway people away from inefficient cars and STRONGLY towards the more efficient.

And yes this strike is about pay to the drivers, who do a dangerous job. So is it more the unions fault?
