Really Down about Playing

When I first took up the game, I used to play cack handed ( left hand below right, right handed golfer). I could strike the ball well enough and knock it round in the low 90s.

I went for a lesson on the advice of this, here forum and its small collection of members. First thing the pro said, was make the change to use the convential grip. I was reluctant but he told me I would find the game much easier in time.

I made the switch and couldn't even get club on ball. I spent the whole lesson and another 100 balls playing quarter swing pitch shots. I thought it would be months before I would be able to even hit the ball with a full swing. Truth was it took me a week. 3 buckets of 100 balls with 2 practice swings and I had grained a swing enough to use on a course. It was hard work but I was striking the ball better than I had done before.

I once read, if a change isnt difficult to make, its probably not worth making.

Make the changes if need be, just make fun of the way you practice to vary it up. Forget about scores for a while and concentrate on something else.

Honestly, I much prefer the rounds in which I strike my irons purley, as opposed to the rounds where I score well.

A bad day on the course is better than a good day at work right? At least you can still play golf. Many people out there can't and would give up alot for the chance to shank it round

I hope you figure it out.

Best of luck

Immediately on taking the club back from address I was taking it on a line away from me - my hip turn to initiate the backswing was basically non-existent. So if I put a tee in the ground maybe 2-3" back from the ball and maybe 2" away from the straight line back from the ball - I'd knock that tee out of the ground

That in itself shouldn't really cause a shank. I suppose it depends on how you are delivering the club back down on this line.

Robin symes has a drill basically doing this on backswing where you then loop it well to the inside the downswing. This may help.

I'll post it later and you can give it a try. No harm done.

Thanks again for that support sir! And all others posting words of encouragement.

Slab has started a blog on what is important when you play the game. Obviously differant answers/priorities from differant players. but it is amazing just how hitting the ball well can raise the spirits. My game can go as quick as it comes back. Looking at some of my PP the same applies to them. I would not be beating myself up SILH.
