Had one a couple of years but not bothered too much with it apart from trying Kodi. After reading about the handheld Nintendo NES coming out later in the year I decided to do a bit of reading up.
I've spent a great afternoon supping ale, watching the golf and setting up Retropie on my Pi. Works an absolute treat so I need to get more ROMs downloaded, I've only set up the SNES ones up to now.

Anyone else mess about with these gadgets?

Not so much the Pi gadgets but have had Mega Drive, SNES ans NES emulators on my android devices for a couple of years.
Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf on MD from 1993 .... class.

Mate, I need some game recommendation's for NES and Mega Drive. Put a few Speccy and C64 games on there but just for old times sake really.

I have a bit of a collection going. On NES, the Super Mario trilogy and Castlevania 2. Contra (an old arcade favourite of mine) and Commando, Galactica.
SNES; Street Fighter 1 and 2, Mario Kart (nothing compares to the original), the original Smash Bros.

But its the MD that I love.
Sonic 1 & 2, Streets of Rage (all time fave), Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Arny Palmer, PGA Tour Golf 2 and 3 (1 was a coding disaster), Mortal Kombat, Chakan The Forever Man, Outrun, Turbo Outrun, Double Dragon as well as a few lesser known titles.

Best part is the ROMs are tiny files, mostly 300-400Kb.

Love my retro games.

you sad bugger;)

Can someone explain to me (in layman's terms!) a.) how much it would cost me to set one of these up and b.)if it's simple to do?

I fancy the NES, but would also fancy more just having a small, retro gaming machine that has everything on.

If you have an Android device then just download an emulator from Play Store. JohnNES is probably the best and truest to form. It's also free.

I got my Pi for 16 quid on Ebay, I think they're still very cheap which was the point of it.
You'll also need a controller (ps3 and xbox 360 work) along with others, a usb stick, memory card etc.
Loads of guides on the Internet how to set up retropie.
I've heard about the Android ones but don't you have to use on screen buttons?

This sounds like a nice little project...will also get approval from the wife as she loves retro gaming.

I'm assuming even the basic spec ones (512mb of ram) will be suitable?

Think so mate, I'm sure mine is the 1st edition and it works fine. There's a pretty cool method of transferring roms onto the Pi, kind if does it for you lol.

Half tempted to get one that's already got everything pre-loaded, but the premium people charge is ridonk.

I nearly did exactly the same but after you've got the hang of it it's a piece of cake to do it yourself.

I went for a more expensive Nvidia shield in the end as it had a lot of other features I thought would be useful and now have thousands of games across pretty much every platform from the Atari through to Playstation 1.

Got a link for where you purchased it?
