couple of my mates just got new garmin watches,,they play off about 21 & 23 and never hit the same distance twice in a round with the same club,i can see the point of good players using them (not me by the way) am i missing something here? just a question.

Maybe the want to get better and consider knowing their yardages to be the best way to do it.

It always pays to know the yardage to a target and what club will get you there. If their game isn't good enough yet, it will be one day, and there are starting with good habits

I play off 17 and have a £200 laser range finder. Helps me massively as it takes the guess work out of the shot, 161 yards to pin, 7 iron. All I have to do then is concentrate on making a good swing and hitting that ball.

Why would that happen?

They are perfectly legal to use in comps.

Depends on the club - as they are only legal if there's a Local Rule to make them so.

Used to be a couple of 'old fart' ones nearby that didn't allow them, but almost all now do.

And straight Distance is the only stat allowed to be calculated. Slope allowance, temperature, wind-speed or compass direction (!) make any DMD illegal - ruling out IPhones and the like as devices,

You can't use range finders that have slope detection on them in competitions.
