Range or course?

I've got some this evening to get out and practice, but I'm not sure whether I should go to the driving range or go out on the course?

I'll be up at the club by about 6:45 / 7, and with sunset at 8:50 tonight, assuming the course is clear I should be able to get close to a full round in if I crack on with it.

However, is that best for the development of my game? Would I be better off going to the range and going out on the short game practice area? Or a combination of range and course?

Having typed this out, I'm thinking the combination of both short game area/driving range and a few holes might be best.

Hmmmmm I like the range, but I also like the course....

but which is better?

there's only one way to find out...

Fiiighhtttt

As the course has changed recently from soft to rock hard I would choose course.
Being on your own and probably having a few holes to yourself you can
try many things.
Bunkers,downhill lies,tight lies,fringe chipping,in fact anything.
Up the range?

Range then 9 holes seems the obvious solution!

That dawned on me as I reached the end of my post.

The only downside is the range at my course is short so it's irons only and the course is a continuous loop of 18 holes with the 9th green about as far from the clubhouse as possible!

Anyway, it's still do-able and I could even stop off at the practice green and bunker which is alongside the third hole.

If you are in trouble with your swing then maybe the range, if you need to work on short game/general game/course management and so on then its course all night long for me! More fun, actually doing the thing rather than practicing the thing.

Personally rather than rushing to play 18 I'd play the course rather than go to the range. Play a couple of balls if there's no one around or spend time around the greens chipping and putting and maybe hit a few bunker shots (although make sure you rake all footprints )

On course play much more realistic and by not rushing to cram the round in you'll get more out of it

Good points....I need to work on everything though! Haha!

But all those Range Rovers, dashing around with their headlights glaring, will lighten the Tunbridge Wells skyline for an extra half hour!!

at the end of the day the course is where you learn and the range is where you ingrain the faults:whistle:

Yep, like Homer said above then. The range is fake, the course is real.

Last Thursday I was out after work, after two holes I came up on what seemed to be lots of 4 balls in a row. There was no one behind me so I spent 15 mins chipping onto the 3rd green, got no better at it :D so moved on. Never saw the other groups again and they had all walked off as I went round the turn. Way better than standing by the chipping green...

Thanks Homer - good shout. I'll have a warm up on the range then play at a leisurely pace, practicing short game and putting as I go.

No point rushing, that won't achieve anything and course is better than range, as everyone has said.

Always the course - play the actual shots instead of picturing them on a range.

course if its daylight and not hammering down with rain...

Last two practices have been playing two balls round the course using a different club or different approach in course management with each ball..

Much better than smashing 50/100 balls at the range IMO...
