whilst the detailed changes to the decisions just announced will no doubt get aired in the Rules Forum, the change of stance on the use of a compass during a round suggests they've been reading thread on here about DMD's where 'how the hell does a compass help me play golf?' is frequently posted!

the new decision regarding the accessing of weather information via the internet during the round isn't a change in the same way, but a clarification that should help reduce the red herrings in the same discussions.

now, if I can just corner the market in cheap compasses I can make a killing selling them to all those golfers who desperately wanted to use one........

I'd say that the rule against compasses has NOTHING to do with compasses and how they in themselves might help the golfer per se. I'm thinking that the local rule proviso would have been written to cover the most common phone app that has nothing to do with position or distance measurement. If you ban the simplest and most common and obvious app - the compass - then you were in a good position to ensure the door remains firmly closed against clever folk coming up with techno stuff that CAN be of benefit beyond distance.
