Now I know that you cannot practice on the course before you enter a competion. My club has 27 holes so is it within the rules to play the 9 holes not being used in any particular competion as a warm up / practice before your tee time. I ask because recently I have been entering comps and playing early/mid afternoon so could easily get 9 in to get the swing working before hand. I intend to ask up at the club but wondered if anyone on here had a definitive answer.

Can't see any problems playing the other 9 no different to playing down the road at another club? It's only the course being played no practice is allowed on.

I believe this is the correct answer. It's only the competition course you can't practise on ahead of a strokeplay event, and the other 9 holes are not part of that competition course.

Thought that would be the case. My concern was that as the 9 holes were in the same place and prepared in the same way by the same people it would be a better indicator of conditions, how greens are running etc on the competition course as opposed to playing 9 at another course.

No problem doing that. Rule is designed to be fair to everybody in the field - irrespective of their start time where early starters don't get the chance to practice but late ones do. Doesn't apply to Matchplay ie. you can practice on the course, as both/all have the same opportunity.

Practice putting green should give you an indication of how greens are running! :D
