They go where the arms go. I don't think you should be thinking about where the hands go. The shoulders turn around the spine, the arms follow & the hands do what comes naturally.

interesting I would strongly disagree though I can’t get my head round the hands go where the arms go but that’s probably just how I work things out

I don't know about you, but my hands are on the end of my arms. I've never been concerned about where they go because they don't drive the swing.

For you that may be the case.

My hands dictate my swing. That’s the beauty of golf. There are many different ways to achieve the same thing ??

The hand path is a theoretical traced curve that follows the path in the swing where the hands join in the grip. Ideally it should trace out a banana shape where the backswing is the outer edge and the downswing the inner edge of the banana.
