Have quite a bit of room in the garage and would love to practice some putting at home.

I have wooden floor or laminate everywhere except the stairs so in the house is out.

My garage has plenty of space and I was wondering if people had ideas for something I could use that would be bigger, longer than the conventional putting mats you can buy.

Obv it has to have a decent roll similar to that of the putting matt and not too expensive. Any ideas? Does anyone else use anything like this?

Carpet tiles.
The ones that are about 2ft sq.
Cut them in half and place them end to end and glue them to the floor.
If you want to be really posh, get green ones :)

But wont the joins make it bumpy?

I was thinking about anything upto 6ft wide and 15ft long that could be rolled up when finished with?

The trouble with keeping it rolled up, is that it will curl, and not roll out flat after a while. This is why my putting mat is now gun tacked to a piece of hard board.

I am not sure that practicing anything over 4 foot is worthwhile, if it isn't on grass.

+1 for that.

Every putt is a straight one. If you can groove a good stroke over 4ft then you just need to alter how hard you hit it to can a few 40footers!! :D

Why murph? Pace?

The pace of our greens change constantly anyway, I'd prefere a longer mat to make sure I groove a decent stroke over the 4ftrs. And I'd get bored of short putts quickly.

Hmm interesting.

So if I were to groove a stroke for 4 footers, then when I bring the clubhead back for a 15,20 or even 30 footer, its going to be online and squared up?

I'd like to hope so, but I doubt it :D

Practicing putting is boring. No matter what length. Especially when you are doing it in the garage.

4 footers are the ones you feel you should get, and confidence in knocking these in goes a long way. Then you can be agressive with longer putts on the course, not worrying how far you go past.

Practicing longer putts doesn't really work. So you get expert at lag putting in your garage, but this has no resemblance to putting for real, as the pace is soooo different.

You would be better off putting into a net, using one of those plastic things stuck on your putter which reduce the hitting area to just the sweat spot.

I have tried putting at work, where the carpet is pretty quick, and I can hit 70 footers if required, and it is a joke. You can't read the line, the floor isn't flat, so the ball tracks the contours. You haven't a clue what is going on. The floor is carpet tiles on concrete.

I had no idea I was you murph, I always thought I enjoyed practicing my putting, even the longer ones. Silly me :D

Regardless, I would certainly like to practice my putting in my garage, because I enjoy it and I'd rather practice some over 4 ft, because... I enjoy it.

If it doesn't resemble the real thing... so what, neither do the putting mats you can nail to a board. I can drain them all day long, but I dont on the course!

So..anyone, any suggestions on material rather than what I wont enjoy? :p

Sorry, just my opinion, which obviously clashes with yours. We'll see how you get on.

You really need a carpet off cut. Know any friendly carpet fitters?

You could always ask in a carpet shop, and see if they have anything.

Carpet tiles are ok, if they are stuck down properly, and are cheap, but you can't roll them up. As said before though, you can't leave stuff rolled up, or it won't go down flat again. It curls up, and you get weird humps and creases in it.

I've got a 9ft mat that seems like felt material which could be pricey for the space you are talking about. Mine sits on carpet tiles in the garage. I didnt get on well with tiles on their own. I know what you mean about squaring the clubface on longer putts Tony as all to often I have sent longer putts off on slightly the wrong line to the one I was aiming at. However I now practice using the Mark Roe drill by turning my mat around and hitting 6 foot to the end of the mat and a mini goal (came with remote control Top Gear Football Cars). I place the penny a clubs length away and work on my longer stroke aiming to get the ball to roll over the penny so I know I squared the clubface and got it started on the right line. The balls end up in the mini goal so don't end up all over the shop. I guess what I'm saying is that with a strip of carpet of putting mat you could achieve a similar effect for less cost and hassle.

If you do want to have a longer putting distance a carpet off cut would be a better bet. Or if you go for the felt route you could introduce some gates to help you judge your accuracy on longer putts. Hope this helps.

I was thinking along the lines of carpet and was hoping someone would recomend a type similar to the stuff they use for mats.

I could go anything up to 20ft but would be happy with 12.

The inlaws just had carpet fitted and I almost died when I heard how much they paid. Maybe i'll check the skips. :D

No seriously though cheers Tiger, i'll look into your suggestion.
