Putting greens, are they a waste of time?

Ours also doubles as a short game area and the fact that it's contoured helps. To be honest whether it does resemble the ones on the course or not, it's always nice to knock a couple of 2 footers in to get confidence in the ball dropping before you go out

Yeah but you have to get there an hour before your round to make sure you make those "couple of 2 footers" .....

When you arrive at your club for a comp, do you have a practice putt on the putting green before you start or is that a waste of time as it bares no resemblance to the greens on the course?

During a round greens can vary quite a bit at some clubs.

The important thing is to get the mind and the body ready for competition. The best way is to repeat the stroke so there is no tension when doing it for the first time under pressure.

The effect of tension will have far more of an effect than the difference between a practice green and the course. A free easy motion will be much more likely to hole or get the pace of a putt right.

If i go out to just practice putting for half hour to an hour & not going out to play its fine, as im just getting set up etc right ,

I dont use it before a competitive round at this time of year as its completely different to course greens , in fairness most of the summer it will be close to course greens , so i will do a bit there on way from range to sign in

Ours bear no resemblance, the practice green is a lot quicker than the actual greens

Spent a good hour working on the set up with a mirror. My head was actually a long way behind the ball and the eyes a long way from over it. Once I got that sorted the shoulders sat nice and square and was making a good solid stroke. The greens are quickening up now the sun is on them and should be rolling nicely in the midweek comp on Thursday
