putters and putting questions

I think the pace balls come off inserts is inconsistent around the edges, especially if your stroke is a bit dodgy and you also get a bit of face. I just think it is better to have a consistent surface to help judge pace.

Out of interest. Due to modern putter weighting. Doesn't the ball come off the face at differing speeds no matter where you catch it on the face? I mean, there is only one 'sweetspot' on any putter.

I understand where you're coming from. Maybe that's why I didn't get on with my Odessy, but get on better with the Bettinardi? In which case, I've kind of answered my own question!

Also. Why is it that larger mallet designs, arguably designed for the higher h'capper, generally have inserts, and bladier (is that a word?) putters generally don't?

I beleive when it comes to putting the more consistent every thing is the better especially when you are trying to judge distance, you are right that the ball comes of at slightly different speeds all over the face, but I think the difference between soft insert and metal rim is the greatest.

This is just an opinion I don't really have anything to back it up.

hi, not strictly a newbie, been playing since I was 7 (now 27!) however at no stage have I ever been shown or taught anything about putting. Last year was the first year I really worked at golf as a sport that I practised and thought about weakness in my game, rather than something I just did with friends during the summer. My general set up was poor and having lessons seemed to help so much so I am think that a proper understanding of putting is only going to help!

just was unsure about how to spec a new putter when I don't know what to do with it :)

i use the yes olivia putter. it has interchangeable weights and c grooves to help with roll.As putting is the most consistent part of my game, that tells its own story.Worthwhile seeing if you can pick a 2nd hand one up!

I think as long as the basics are right and that the wrists don't break, there is no lower half body movement or head movement then the actual stroke itself can be idiosyncratic. Just look how many methods are employed on the main tours but all adhere to the basics. Personally I don't feel that inserts give any differences in terms of the balll coming off the face, certainly not with the odyssey dualforce 554, TM Daytona and TM Itsy I own.

I'd say wait, get the pro to fit you at your lesson.

You might find a centre shaft suits you better, won't know till you try so go play with all of AG's stock, but don't let them fit you.
