Hi all. I'm just curious as to what the general consensus is on the R&A rules on amateur prizes. Is it fair that amateur competition is restricted to prizes to the value of £500 maximum? Would anybody consider playing in an amateur handicap tournament that offered a high prize (say £10k to winner) even if they knew they would lose their amateur status for two years?

Morbid curiosity. Please vote.

If anyone of us won £10,000 would you really say 'thanks, but no thanks' i would take it,no question. Its like getting a hole in one when a brand new car is on offer, would you say no to that.

Does "prizes to the value of" count as well, or is it just cash?

I heard of someone once who had a hole-in-one, and took a cash alternative instead of an Audi TT, and had to turn pro to do it.

Would he have also been considered pro if he's had the car instead of cash?

Prizes in amateur events are limited to a value of £500.

Those who accept prizes with higher values than the rules allow - a car for a hole-in-one for instance - enter a no-man's land. They have no official handicap and cannot take part in amateur events, but they do not become professionals.

from the R&A website

I happened to read it yesterday

Years ago I won a trip to Spain to play in the European finals of a time share company. (no it wasnt a hard sell act). As far as I know then the prise money was £250 value. There was 8 people from each of the home countries went. It was a fantastic week. 5 days golf which was great. We were the 1st to play the course, Canyamel I'd love to go back someday but HID's isnt keen.

I'd take the money then buy myself a lovely fishing rod!

We have an 'auction style' event every year. These are against the rules, and the winning pair win about 1500, which is against the rules. Who cares? Actually I do, as do alot of others, but it is 'traditional' so it is ok. Ok?

I wouldnt enter the comp. Wouldnt want to give up my amateur comps and handicap just for £10k. It would have to be for a life changing amount of money

I would.
I was a "nomad" golfer for 8 years before joining Highwoods this year, and still got enough games in with my mates to satisfy me. They would still let me play off 12 with them whether I won 10 grand or 100.
I could live without competition golf for 2 years, which I think is the amount of time you would lose your amateur status?

For those that have said no, how much would the prize have to be for it to be a yes?

Life changing money , like a lottery win. I'm comfortable with my life how it is so winning a small pot means nothing to me. Maybe the equivalent of a tour win , something like that

£10k would be a nice deposit on a house.
Where & when is said hypothetical comp'?
:p

Not for 10k as I enjoy the club comps and away competitions too much.

100k plus would get me thinking about it haha! That would at least let me quit my job for a while....
