Hi completely new to ponds but moved in jan and there is a pond approx 4ft deep and 12ftx12ft hold apparently 16000 litres. any way when we purchased the house the pond look really good. We new the seller was going to take the koi and pump but it looks in a sorry state now. Have got 2 quotes for emptying cleaning refill and pump/filter but the prices are stupid £2500 1st quote and £1800 for 2nd so today I borrowed a pump and emptied it and cleaned it. Can anyone recommend a pump/filter not going to put koi in just gold fish.

Pm your number and a suitable time to call you tomorrow and I’ll go through everything with you.

If it's in an open position and you're only keeping goldfish (as long as it's not too many) that size of pond should settle down to a stable condition on its own where you have to do very little to it apart from a clear out of sludge from the bottom every two or three years.

A decent amount of oxyginating plant would be my choice. That and some nice lillies and other plants to provide shade for the fish.
I've never put pumps in my ponds, and always had nice clear water and healthy fish:)

Aren't Gold fish Koi carp just very young?

I'll second that, I rebuilt my pond after the G'kids have grown up.
Two years old and newts returned in the first year, tadpoles in second.
There is also some good hexagonal plastic things that you can clip together that float on/just below the surface that stop the herons from eating the fish.

I always thought the Koi never stop growing, whereas goldfish will only grow according to their number and surface area of where they live.

Any recommendations for online suppliers of pond plants ?

Local garden centres are sparsely stocked.....

Koi can grow to 2 feet or more in the right conditions, they are big fish. My oldest goldfish is about twenty years old and is probably around 8 inches long. Putting a gold fish in too small a space just stunts their growth and will probably shorten their lifespan too.

It’s taken a few months to sort but now I’m really happy with my pond just a few things to finish off.
